“What is this time, Siciliano?” Linden’s playful voice came through. “Did you actually help a Russian bratva escape?”
“Why does everyone think I would do such a thing after I put him there in the first place? But I have a more pressing matter at hand, Linden. I was hoping you could help me. I don’t have much time to explain.”
“Of course. What is it?”
“My computer expert is not around at this moment. I want the exact location of this plate number.” I gave him the number.
“Give me a minute.” He then told his assistant not to disturb him. “Are you in some kind of trouble, Siciliano?”
“You could say that. My house was blown up. My father is in a safe house recovering. My wife and my sister were kidnapped by an Irish lunatic, and I’m trying to find them.”
“Wait. What? All done by this Irishman?” I heard keyboards clicking in the background.
“Yes. A tall, white Irishman with white hair in his seventies, whom I never thought was lying to me all this time. I have a feeling he was working with Francesco.”
“I can do better than that,” he said. “Do you want to check the Irishman’s identity who traveled to Sicily?”
My hope rose. I’d been terrified for the last few hours for my father, my wife, and my sister. “You’re a Godsend, Linden. Do it.”
“An Irish old man who entered Sicily within this week,” he uttered as he typed. “Got ten possible matches, but one that stood out according to your description. Aidan Finn rings a bell?”
“No, but he probably uses an alias. Send me the image.” I just told him my phone pinged.
Aidan Finn’s image popped up on my phone screen, wearing the same face as Ronan.
“Motherfucker!”
“Is that the Irishman you’re looking for?”
“The very same man who pretended to be the house caretaker in Ireland.”
“It seems you’ve been busy. As for the plate number. It’s a black seven-seater SUV leaving an abandoned warehouse.”
“An abandoned warehouse?” I muttered. “There’s a few kilometers from the port. That’s where he keeps my wife and sister.”
“If he’s leaving, then maybe he’s heading somewhere,” he suggested.
“He just got his money. Fuck. I hope to God he did not touch my wife and Celestina.” I covered my phone. “Gio, call Matteo and Luca to check the warehouse this very instant. I need to follow this motherfucker.”
“Right away, boss.” Gio worked on his order.
“Siciliano, he may have an exit plan. Check the port or the private airport.”
“He’d been to the port. That’s how he found them. I say, with that amount of money in his offshore account, he’s gonna use the fastest way to get out of this island because he knows me. He won’t get away that easily once he’s on my radar.”
“There’s a private airport eight miles from your location.”
“I know that one.”
“You better hurry up. You have the advantage if you get there before they arrive. One vehicle, you don't even need a backup. Good luck and be careful. I hope you get Dani and your sister back safely.”
“We will. Thanks, man.” I looked at Tristan. “Private airport, seven miles from here. Take the fastest route. We can’t be late.”
“Got it. I know a shortcut,” Tristan said.
I looked at Gio. “Inform our backup not to follow us. Keep their distance and make sure they won’t be made by Aidan Finn and his men.”
The vehicle fell into silence, but the purring of the engine sped up to the highway, quite contrary to how my heart raced in my chest. My mind went back to my wife and my sister. They must be frightened, knowing Dani trusted the old man once.
I was scared that I might not see Dani and Celestina alive, a feeling that I was unaccustomed to anymore. I used to depend on my family's safety on my men because they were capable.
When Dani came into my life, threats just kept coming, revelations popping, and I began to live in uncertainty, yet I was satisfied.
Overprotectiveness was rooted in me, but I still failed to protect my wife. And it was killing me that they were alone and terrified out there. Knowing how I worked, they knew the people who took them would not keep them alive the moment they got what they came here for.
“Boss, Matteo just called. The warehouse was empty, but there were ropes and fresh boot prints on the floor. No blood.”
“That’s a good sign that they’re still alive. They’re using them as leverage to get out of Sicily safe.” I grabbed the bulletproof vest from the back, put it on, and fastened it securely. I took two for them. “Put them on.” Then I plugged the earpiece into my ear.
I picked up the automatic rifle, attached the suppressor, and checked the magazine as a necessity. The familiar weight of the gun in my hand made it efficient to hit a target. Then I grabbed two extra magazines. “How far are we?”
“Two miles.”
My phone rang again. “Yup.”
“Aidan Ronan Finn. Failed businessman in the late 1990s. In the early 2000s, he entangled himself with a leader of an organized crime in Dublin.”
“Who? Cillian MacLynch?”
“Nope. MacLynch was the feared and strong rival at that time. According to the unconfirmed report, MacLynch killed his sons, Declan and Aidan Jr., Or known as Ronan.”
“Son of a bitch. This isn’t about money. He’d waited for two decades to get his vengeance. I admire his patience, but he just made his worst enemy.”
“What am I missing here, Siciliano?”
“MacLynch was Dani’s father.”
“Holy shit. Your Dani is the daughter of a top organized crime family in Ireland? Damn. Aren’t you guys meant to be? Anything else?”
“We’re close to the airport. Talk to you soon.” I hung up the call and put my phone on silent mode.
“Where should I park?”
“Inside. Expect someone to be waiting for their arrival. Be sharp. Focus on saving Dani and Celestina. The rest I don’t give a shit.”
We made it inside the hangar. The small plane’s door was opened.
“You’re early. I expect you to arrive in two hours, but the jet’s fuel is full.” A man climbed down. Based on his accent, he was definitely not Italian. He was American.
“Sorry to break it to you, but I’m not your passenger?” I aimed my handgun at him. “Who else is with you?”
His eyes widened, and he raised his hands quickly. “I’m just a pilot.”
“Who the fuck else is with you?”
He swallowed hard. “Um, my co-pilot and a stewardess.”
“Armed?”
“No.” He shook his head. “We were booked to fly to Athens. That’s all we know.”
“How many passengers?”
“One.”
“Do you expect me to believe you will only carry one passenger?”
“Yes, sir. Aidan Finn.” Son of a bitch.
“He’s gonna kill his crew,” Gio whispered, putting his earpiece on.
“Go down and hide.” Tristan took the co-pilot and the female stewardess down the jet. “Get in that room and don’t come out until someone comes to open it for you. You, too, just a pilot. Now!”
They hurried towards the door of an office. Once the crew was locked inside the room, I nodded at Tristan and Gio. They fan out to take their positions. I climbed up the jet.
The thought of that piece of shit killing his men, Dani, and Celestina sent an extreme surge of rage through my body.
“We have company. Sleek black SUV heading inside,” Tristan reported in a whisper through our comm.
“Got it. Be careful. We don’t wanna get Dani and Cee in a crossfire.”
“Boss, two men came out. It’s affirmative, the old man is one of them. The driver is behind the wheel,” Gio whispered. “Fuck. I saw Dani.”
“And Celestina?”
“I can’t see her, but there’s another man inside. Four assailants.”
“Boss, we need to make a move. I got the driver and the other man inside,” Tristan confirmed. “They’re starting to get suspicious. One giant man is coming towards you.”
“Got it. When you’re ready.” I hid myself behind the chair and aimed my handgun at the door. As soon as I saw the foot enter the door, I held my breath.
“Targets acquired,” Tristan gave a go.
“I’m ready,” Gio said.
“The old man is mine. Now.” The man walked in and scanned inside. I aimed at his head and pulled the trigger twice.
