                    TERZO
A hot flush rushed up my neck and spread over my face.
“No. I thought I knew her. She reminded me of someone I met long ago.” I faked a facial expression as if it brought back a painful memory. I looked at Marco and crossed my legs. He knew what that meant. The plan might blow off.
“I see. Me too. I met a beautiful woman. She literally came from nothing. After I dressed her up, gave her my heart, and everything a woman could ask for, she left me with a thug.”
My lips twisted in a dark amusement. Was he referring to me? My heart jacked up. God, how I wanted to choke him with the espresso cup and watch him die slowly and painfully. It made the adrenaline rush through my blood.
“Do you need anything, sir?” Katie asked, bounced her gaze between Humphries in me, held the tray with both hands while finger tapping in Morse Code.
Long, long, short. G
Long, long, long. O
Long, short. N
I read them in my head. GON. Get Out Now?
“Get away.” Humphries signaled, his gaze focused on me.
Rage rose inside me at how he treated his employees.
Once Katie was gone, Humphries crossed his arms over his chest. His features suddenly changed from being a smug son a bitch to a real motherfucker. “I did my research, too, Mr. Agustino. Imagine my surprise.” Was this a trick?
I remained calm. Whatever dirt he found out, I didn’t give a damn. I’d done this a thousand times. Nothing surprised me anymore. “What did you find out about me?”
“It’s not what I found out. It’s who you are associated with. I’ve been looking for this man for months.” Of course, it was planted there for you to find. He should give credit to Luca for manipulating some images of me and Tomas. I was grateful that Dani had pictures of Tomas in her phone.
“Tomas Giordani. He saved me once. I owed him, but he was associated with some bad guys. Bad investments that got him killed. I gave him money so he could start over. How do you know him?”
“He stole something from me.”
“Oh. Then allow me to pay it for you.”
He smirked. “I was hoping you would say that, but that’s not what I want. I want you to invest in my nightclub, Fantasy. I’m sure you’ve heard of it.”
“I did. I was planning to visit Fantasy this Friday.”
“I’ll arrange a VIP room for you.
“That’s kind of you, but I’m aiming for Humphries Capital. Big investments, big profits.”
“I agree.” His features darkened, almost insulted. “My father will profit, yes, but he’s very picky, especially if you’re not yet a member of the B club.” Liar. I checked the investors. Some didn’t even have fifty million fifty-million-dollar net worth.
“I see.” I nodded and sipped the espresso. I knew what he was doing. He wanted capital, knowing I had more money than he had in his bank account. “Maybe you can arrange a meeting with your father.”
“He’s busy with his party, but if you can show us the number, then I can endorse you to my father.”
“That would be great. I’ll make sure to inform my assistant.” If I wanted to invest in your father’s business, I should have arranged this meeting with him, not you, moron. Deck was really an idiot. I didn’t know what Dani saw in him other than his hair because I was sure my dick and my brain were bigger than his.
He leaned over the table and smiled. “I know who you are, Terzo.” What the actual fuck? How did he know? “You’re the kind of man I want to do business with.” Okay, he got me there. “Trust me, we will become rich together. Apache is easy money.”
“I’m sorry, there must be a mistake. I don’t sell drugs.” For a moment, I should be surprised, or shocked even, but I wasn’t. “I want to invest in legit businesses.”
“Ten million, for a starter. I’ll give you ten percent.”
“That’s a lot for a starter, Deck.” I let go of the formality now that he got me. I didn’t even want to deny it. I wanted him to know who I was. It was time to drop the facade. “Where do you get your suppliers?”
The question was, how did he find out about me? I didn’t have pictures on the internet, even my death. When I worked for the agency, my profile my pictures were deleted all over the internet, except for the current alias. Unless his source was close to me. Unless he was informed ahead of time.
Was it Katie? I knew Katie would never sell me out to a guy like him, even if he threatened her. Katie could handle a guy like him.
“I know someone from the north, but we have supplies here in the city.” He sounded so desperate. Why was he exposing his distributors to someone like me? Was he this trusting? Did he really think I would not call the cops? Or was he just too confident that he was untouchable because of his father’s connection? What an idiot. And Dani dated him for six months.
Jesus Christ.
He was so smug, selfish, and cocky, and he looked like the kind of man who took care of himself than his partner. The fact that he didn’t satisfy Dani’s need explained a lot about what kind of man he was.
I studied him for a moment. “And here I thought Deck Humphries wasn’t involved with mobs.” I stood up and buttoned my suit. “It’s disappointing, really. Your father must be proud of you.”
“I know who you are. You’re a mob, too. That’s why I agreed to this meeting.”
I laughed and shook my head. “So you want a more powerful mob to invest in your nightclub, is that it?”
“Three million, Damian.”
“It’s Damiano. And no. I’m a legit businessman.”
“I know who you are. You’re Terzo Siciliano.”
“You can call me Al Capone, but got the wrong guy.” I just took the first step, the door busted, and the cops barged in. It happened so fast that the only thing I could hear was reading my Miranda rights until the cold cuffs locked around my wrists tightly.
Fuck.
