TERZO
Son of bitches.
Gunfires continued. If I could calculate, there were about half a dozen attackers. I was just glad everyone in the meeting had their own bodyguard and details.
“Sandro, we’re under attack. I want you to send men to the casino. Shoot anyone who’s shooting at you, and you don’t recognize them. I want men to protect Dani’s convoy once they make it out of the building. They can be followed.”
“Got it, boss. We’ll be there in ten.”
“Inform Luca to get his man ready to protect the compound.”
“He’s listening, sir.”
“I’m here, boss. We’re getting ready as we speak,” Luca responded.
“Good.” I hung up the phone and slipped it into my pocket. “We should split.”
“Good idea. We will go to the east wing,” Vincent said. “If we make it out alive, I will call as soon as I can.”
“We’ll go upstairs and use the exit ladder.” Gavin joined the Rosettis, and his men went ahead.
“We’ll go west. North is too crowded. People might still be trapped in there. I don’t wanna get them in crossfires. We’ll keep in touch.”
My father, Alessio, Tristan, and I were all armed. As soon as they left, I gestured at my father to go back. He trusted my instinct and order, and did not even question my plan.
“What do you have in mind, boss?” Alessio asked.
“I have a plan, but first let’s find the monitor room.”
Without questioning my plan, they followed me. It was to the left of the lounge area. Within two minutes, we made it. The path was cleared. The door with the Monitor room name on it is just a few steps before us.
I signalled Tristan as I stayed aside in case there was someone inside. My father stayed behind me. Alessio is on the other side. Tristan kicked the door. It swung open. I entered, aimed my gun inside.
An armed man was talking on comms froze.
“Put your gun down or your brain will decorate this room.” I stole a glance at the dead person on the floor with a bullet wound to the head.
The man didn’t do as I said. Tristan didn’t waste time, he knocked him down with his gun. The man fell on the floor.
“Search him.”
Alessio went to his work while I took over the monitor and searched for Gio and Marco to see if they made it out safe. I had no doubt they would protect Dani and my sister with their lives, but I didn’t want them to sacrifice themselves to save everyone.
“Fuck.” My chest heaved. My stomach flipped, a knot forming in my throat as I watched them under heavy fire.
“As if the attackers knew their route,” Papa noted.
“Exactly. It was just us who knew this plan,” Tristan said.
“Why do you sound surprised? That asshole was in comms with the rest. They came prepared, but what I wanted to know is how they got to our itinerary.”
“No ID.” Alessio tied the man and gagged him after taking off his weapons.
“Fuck!” I was on my feet as I watched them pinned down almost towards the back exit.
“Jesus Christ,” Papa muttered. “Where are our men?”
“Oh, no.” That one came from Tristan. “Jesus.”
I froze and forgot to breathe when Marco was hit.
“Dani.” I gasped audibly. My hands were on my head, gripping my hair hard until it hurt. My eyes were wide with fear and shock as she froze under heavy fire. It was the most painful thing I’d watched while I was helpless. Even if I could run to them, I wouldn’t make it on time. The sight of her sent a surge of rage through me.
Then she did the most amazing fucking thing. She fired her gun and helped Marco up. They ran together towards the exit while shooting at the attacker.
“She can’t just help it. She has to risk her life.” My eyes prickled, both relieved and terrified for them.
“Man, she just saved Marco’s life.” Tristan patted my arms. “They made out.”
“She’s safe, son. Now, what’s our plan?”
“Someone’s talking to the comm,” Alessio said.
I picked up and listened. This man was Italian, but the accent from the other line was definitely not.
“Take him.”
The man resisted, fear showed in his eyes as he stared at me. He clearly knew who I was.
I looked right into his eyes. “If I were you, you would cooperate, and I might make it quick and less painful.”
We made it down. There was resistance waiting for us at the underground parking lot. We clashed with gunfire. I killed two.
Tristan threw a gas canister as we searched for our vehicles. Thankfully, our reinforcements arrived, eliminating the attackers. Two more SUVs followed.
“Let’s go before the cops find us here,” Papa said as he entered the SUV.
“I’ll follow.” I turned to Alessio. “Keep him safe.”
“Terzo.” I could see the worry and hesitance in my father’s voice, but he respected my decision. He nodded and ordered the driver to leave. He was right. The cops were probably at the hotel entrance or blocking the road.
“Take care of this one.” Tristan pushed the man inside the SUV.
The man murmured.
“Take off his gag,” I ordered. “I wanna hear what he’s gonna say.”
Matteo pulled it down. The man started talking. “I’m just one of the men who got an offer to find a woman and kill anyone who resists.”
“What woman?”
“I saw the picture. Dani Souls.”
My men looked at me.
“Call Gio. They’re not safe. Double the guard at the compound. Once they make it to the house, lock down the entire compound.”
Tristan went to call Gio while I asked more questions. “Who recruited you? How did you know where to find us?”
“I don’t know. I just received a text to join the WhatsApp group. Then we were selected based on our experience. I knew computers.”
“Did you kill the man in the monitor room?”
“No.” He shook his head, trembling. “I haven’t killed anyone before.”
“Liar.”
“I swear, sir.” He started crying.
“Where’s your phone? How did you meet?”
“They took my phone. Old warehouse downtown in Romeo. He told us where to go, and he got the hotel underground blueprint.”
Oh, fuck. “Giordani’s.”
I showed him the picture, but he shook his head.
When he saw one of Giordani’s soldiers, he pointed at him. “This man. I swear. This is the man we met to give us instructions.”
I nodded at Matteo. “Clean up the mess. I’m done playing cat and mouse. It’s time to be the fucking wolves and hunt.”
I put on full tactical gear and comms.
The two-story concrete building that served as Francesco’s office came into view. My men split into four groups, covering the exit, the entrance, the perimeter, and a fourth group that would come with me.
“Perimeter secured,” group three reported. “Some movements on the second floor.”
“Exit is covered,” confirmed the second group.
The entrance was also covered. Shaped charge attached.
“Ready for the breach,” I spoke to the speaker. My heart pumped hard. “On my mark. One. Two. Three. Go.”
Detonated. Door blasted and down. My men rushed in, started sweeping the area for hostiles. Half of them stayed behind, the rest went ahead to cover me in advance as we ascended to the second floor.
On the staircase, two armed man with weapons ready, but dropped them and raised their hands.
“First floor clear.” I heard through the comm.
We made it to the east wing. Two men were guarding the door, where I expected Francesco to be inside.
He pulled his gun. Before he could shoot, I shot him. Despite the silencer I used, the other didn’t get to fire the gun, but a man came from the bathroom and shot at us, alarming Francisco inside.
I kicked the door. Tristan and I walked in, shooting the men standing behind Francesco.
For a man who threatened me, kidnapped me and Dani, and now attacked us to get to us, he couldn’t even protect himself anymore. His face paled as if he knew this was the end of his road.
“Don’t ever try to play hero if you don’t wanna die behind your desk.”
“Do you think I’m your worst enemy?” he spoke, but not as strongly as we last met.
“I have many enemies. You’re not the worst, Francesco. The truth is, you’re the weakest. You hide behind your men. You used an innocent woman for your own selfish gain. You’re a coward, that’s why people like you don’t stay longer in this business.” I pointed my gun at his head. “Now call your men to stand down.”
