TERZO
I called Magnus as I climbed up to the waiting private jet.
He picked up right away as if he were waiting for a call. “Boss, what’s up?”
“I want you to buy Dani some clothes.”
“Of course. I’m going to see her right away.”
“No. She’s not coming with you.”
There was a long pause. “Do you hear me? Go to Cee and take a credit card from her.”
“What should I buy?”
“You dated a lot of women, I’m sure you know what women wear. Ask the saleslady for assistance, Magnus. Why do I have to explain this to you?”
“Wew, grumpy. Clothes, dress, casual, lingerie.”
I inwardly groaned as I took a seat. I should be the one buying Dani lingerie, not someone like Magnus. “I’ll take care of the lingerie. I know her size. Now go.”
“Can I take Cee with me? I can ask her advice.”
“No. Why do you think I don’t want Dani going out shopping? The situation is still hot, and you’re not a Siciliano. You’re not gonna be a target, but try to keep a low profile.”
“Right, I’m expendable. Why don’t you give her a credit card so she can buy some clothes online?”
“I have her credit card, but she won’t buy anything. She would tell me she didn’t marry me for money.
“I’ll buy anything that the saleslady suggests to me, boss.” I could see him grinning.
“Whatever. I have to go.” I just hung up the call. Dani just texted me.
DANI: I just arrived home. Can I ask you something?
After we visited the newly opened cheese factory, she rode with another vehicle home while I was heading to the airport. I already miss her.
I dialed her number.
“Hey.” Her soft voice came through the speaker. She had a soft, sexy, and calming voice that would sound great on a podcast or a romance audiobook. I wondered what it was like when she was on the part of reading the sex scene?
“Hey, you.” I didn’t realize we never really talked over the phone since we got married.
“I was wondering if you have people that I can ask to take my things from my old apartment. There were not many, but I don’t wanna see or talk to my ex-roommate.”
“Your boxes are already in the apartment, beautiful.” Shit. I even forgot to tell her.
“Really? Since when? Why did you not tell me?”
“Sorry. It slipped my mind. I told Gio and Marco to grab your things and bring them to the apartment before we went to Marettimo.”
“Oh. Thanks. There isn’t valuable there, but my bitch roommate just decided to evict me like we hadn’t been friends since college.”
“Don’t worry, Dani. Do you need something in those boxes you want me to bring home? I can go to my apartment to pick up something for you.”
“Nah. I’m good. And thanks for keeping them in your apartment.” She sighed as if she was going to say something, but held it back.
“What is it? What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. I just can’t believe my life fits in those boxes.”
“That’s not true. Just a few chapters of your life. You’ve just started a new chapter when we met. I just hope I’m still in your epilogue, Dani.”
“Wow.” She chuckled. “Epilogue, huh?”
“I like to read books when I have time. I’ve been following this crime series for years now. I’m on book twenty-three.”
“Well, do you see yourself in my epilogue?”
“I’d love to think I do.” The jet started to run on the runway for takeoff. “Dani, I have to go. We’re taking off.”
“Just be careful. I’ll see you soon.”
“Bye, mia bella.”
I looked outside the window and ignored Tristan’s smirk. Before I met Dani, they always teased me that I should settle down and start a family. I told them, at my age, I’d rather drown myself in the ocean than get married. Right now, a lot of things have changed: my perspective, my status, especially my priorities.
“When the boss is happy, so is everyone,” Gio said.
I wish I could tell Dani I wanted to start a family with her when this problem with her father was over. Even if I killed him, there were still many questions that needed answers.
“I don’t like it when you don’t give me time to arrange your visit, Siciliano.” Grace met me in the hallway of the most guarded and impenetrable prison. “I’m a busy person. What do you want with Olezka?”
“I promise, it won’t take ten minutes. I just want to ask him some questions.” I pinned the visitor’s ID on my suit jacket.
“Did you present that to the security?”
“This is just an Italian cigar.”
“You’re not allowed to smoke in the room, nor is a prisoner.”
“I’m sure you can make an exception. I only told the security that you requested this.”
“Are you insane?” Her eyes narrowed. “I wouldn’t request such a thing.”
I changed the subject. “Can I ask you something?”
She rolled her eyes in annoyance. “The book again?”
“No. Has anyone come to question him?”
“None. For over nine months since he’s been transferred here. Why?”
“I’ll tell you once I get the answer.”
“Be careful. You know the drill.” She quickly turned her back and walked away.
After passing several inspections and electronic and biometric doors, I finally got inside the visitor room where I had a face-to-face with Ruslan Olezka. I took a seat and waited for him to be brought.
The guards assisted him inside. He was wearing a gray jumpsuit, handcuffed, and ankle chains. He’d lost some weight, but he became more physically fit, and there was a gray hair on the sides of his head.
Once he sat across me, the guard locked his chain on the table. Ruslan still terrified me. Not what he could do here to me, but outside. I knew it in my gut that I would be his first mission to eliminate. I betrayed him. I put him here. I would do the same thing if I were in his position.
He shrugged. “Kak dela, staryy drug? I’m surprised you came.” His piercing blue and green eyes locked with mine. His heterochromia was nothing like I’d seen before. “What do I owe you this pleasure, Andrei?”
“You already know my name by now.” I picked up a picture from my jacket pocket and put it on the table. “Did you do this?”
“No.” He barely looked at it and raised his cuffs. The chain made a clinking sound.
“Do you expect me to believe you?”
