TERZO
On the way to the Hover private airport, I clicked the home security surveillance app on my phone. I just watched Dani enter the basement.
“What the fuck, Dani?” My chest squeezed tighter and tighter.
She wasn’t aware her father was waiting behind the door. Her body language stiffened as she realized something was wrong.
I couldn’t watch it anymore. Part of me was denying that this was not live footage. My insides felt like melting as I dialed her number, and she didn’t pick up.
Jesus Christ. She did not take her phone with her. I loved the fact that she didn’t spend too much time on her phone, but right now, I wish she did.
I dialed Marco again. “Take her out of the basement, Marco, or I swear to God I will lock you down with that son of a bitch, kill you both and let your remains rot down there. She’s getting herself killed!”
“Sir, she asked me to give her five minutes.” His voice shook.
“She doesn’t have five minutes if you’re watching the monitor, moron!” I gritted my teeth and made sure not to scream because I was sitting next to Moses.
“Jesus!” He panicked.
“Marco?” I called his name, but he didn’t reply anymore. I knew the line was on because I could still hear rustling and scratching. “Marco? For fuck’s sake answer me! Fuck!” I lost it. My phone nearly cracked in my grip.
“Calm down.” I felt Moses’ grip on my shoulder. “Call your security and let them go where Dani is.”
I drew a very long, shaky breath and dialed Matteo. He picked up right away. “Sir, there’s been an emergency.”
“That’s why I’m calling you.” I sighed a little. “Take some men down with you.”
“I got four. We’re going down to the basement.”
“Make sure that motherfucker is dead when I arrive. Don’t let Marco get out of your sight. That cousin of mine is gonna pay.”
“All right, sir. I’ll talk to you soon.”
I pressed the end button with my finger, shaking. I wanted to watch the surveillance video, but my hand hung in the air. I couldn’t. I just couldn’t watch her suffer if Francesco did something to her, and I’d rather punish myself to take her pain away.
I let go of a shuddering, shaky breath as I stared at the black screen of my phone, and I didn’t know how long I was there in that position until a single tear dropped.
“She’s gonna be okay, Terzo. Let’s not waste time,” Moses said.
I felt the car stop moving. When I lifted my gaze to the window, we were already at his private airport, but I still had to wait for nine hours before I could see her.
If there were a way I could turn back time, I wish I had taken her with me, so that she would not have attempted to go down and talk to Giordani. And it seemed that locking her in the compound wasn’t the best strategy.
We climbed up into Moses’ huge jet, almost the same size as a domestic aircraft.
He received a call from someone and took a seat.
I sat across from him while Tristan and Gio went behind us. They didn’t say a word or ask questions because they already knew what was happening back in Sicily.
I unlocked the phone. Before I could tap the app, Moses stopped me. “Your men got there on time.”
“You were talking to Papa?” I stared at him, waiting for more information, but it didn’t come.
I scrolled his name on my call logs, but Moses stopped me again. “I need to know if Dani is okay.”
“She’s okay.” I felt like there was more to it than he was telling me. His expression changed, almost grim.
“And?” I needed more. I was desperate to know the update. “I need to call my father.”
“Listen to me, Terzo. Unavoidable things happen. I know she is your wife, but the less you know right now, the better.”
“No.” I clenched my jaw hard so I wouldn’t cry or break something in this jet. “I have the right to know. You keep saying that but you don’t know shit.”
“Of course, you have every right to know, to protect your wife, but it happened. She went down to talk to Francesco, but Francesco might have sensed that she knew something. There is a traitor in your organization or one of your alliances. Review the footage carefully to determine who had access to the basement. Call your father if that makes you feel better.”
I quickly dialed my father’s number. “Is she okay?”
I heard a long exhale from the end of the line. “Francesco choked her to death.”
“W-what?” My voice broke. I gasped an air. My hand on my head, clutching my hair. Tears of panic burned my eyes. “Is she okay, Papa?”
“She is. She lost consciousness. The doctor is on the way.”
“Don’t wait for the doctor. Bring her to the hospital, please? Where is the motherfucker, Papa?”
“He’s dead. Marco shot him.”
“My cousin will pay for this. I specifically told him to watch my wife. He has only one job, and he failed me. Spectacularly.”
“Son, stop blaming everyone right now. Come home, and we will sit down and talk.”
“Give me the phone.” Moses gestured.
“I shouldn’t have left her at home.” I gave him my phone. We were up in the air and watched the clouds from the window, and I still had to wait long hours before I could hold my wife.
“It’s me. Tell your men to bring her to the private research hospital close to your home. I donated a huge amount of money to the research facility there. I will personally call the hospital head so they won’t question her injury.” He ended the call and gave my phone back, and called the head of his security.
“Thank you, sir.”
“No problem. Just don’t break anything in my jet. Hold it for a little while until we land. You can pour your anger on Giordani’s dead body.” But he didn’t say on Marco’s.
His security head came. “Sir?”
“Osmium HQ is too far. Call a private security agency to assist with the arrival of Dani Souls at the private research hospital. You know the drill. She will be admitted to the private room on the top floor. Make sure to secure the hospital and put men outside her door.”
“Right away, sir.” When the security head left, Moses stared at me. “I saw my son in your eyes, Terzo, when London was in danger. How’s Magnus, by the way?”
I scoffed. “Do you really wanna know about the guy who kidnapped your daughter-in-law? How’s Cade, by the way?”
“I know how you feel, son. Dani will be okay.”
“I hope so.” I looked down at my shaky hands. “I feel like I’ve failed her as a husband many times than I failed in my entire life. I put her life in a lot of danger since we got married.”
“It’s not your fault, Terzo. It’s her fake father. The only mistake you’ve made is keeping him alive for the sake of Dani. Dani has a mind of her own. You can’t keep her in your cocoon. That’s not living. Your business may be dangerous, but she can have a life like everybody else.”
I met his gaze. “So you want me to divorce my wife and set her free?”
“No. Most of your businesses are legit. You have enough money in AMG.” How the fuck did he know about Arrow Monetary Group? Of course, he knew everything. He was Moses fucking Braddson.
I calmed down a bit, but I couldn’t help but think about Dani. I tried to sleep, but it didn’t work. I tried to drink, but Moses ordered the attendant not to give me any more alcohol. Instead, he gave me something so I could sleep.
And I did.
