                    TERZO
Two days ago, Dani was finally released from the hospital with prescribed medicines and therapy. She started to have trouble sleeping, constantly waking up in the middle of the night. No nightmare, though, which I thought was a good thing.
She slowly got her voice back, but the doctor suggested avoiding speaking as much as possible and staying hydrated. She had been complaining for the two breakfasts about not having to drink coffee.
I got Francesco’s phone records, but I hadn’t gotten the chance to scan through the file.
“I don’t like his silence. It’s like watching a faulty grenade to explode, an active volcano to erupt. I just want him to scream at me for once. I don’t like this Terzo right now. He makes me edgy.”
Celestina grimaced, holding her cup of coffee while Dani talked. Yesterday, she stole my sister’s coffee while engrossed in their conversation. “I think you’re talking too much. You know he can hear you, right?”
“Oh, you’re there. I didn’t hear you come.” She actually knew I’d been here, standing at the kitchen door.
Her eyes lit up when Marco walked in. She’s been asking about him since the hospital, but I tried avoiding talking to Marco. Every time I remembered what happened, I lost my temper.
Before her release, I finally watched the whole footage. It was terrifying to watch. How could a man like Francesco hurt a woman, not even his size?
She immediately slid off the stool and ran in Marco’s direction, which made him freeze. She hugged him tight, thanked him, and apologized.
“I’m so sorry, Dani. It took me a while to come to you.”
“No, no, no. I put you in such a tough decision. I’m sorry.”
“You should rest your voice. Drink some water,” I interrupted them. Marco quickly stepped away.
She gestured as if crushing me in her hands. “You don’t have work to do?”
“If you keep talking, I’d rather make that mouth useful.”
She blushed crimson, glaring at me. My sister and Marco laughed.
“I’m still on sick leave.”
“Take your meds and rest. Watch some movies or do something that doesn’t involve talking.”
I went to my office and started working on some reports that had been stuck on my desk for days. I wasn’t worried about business. Its mounted profits were impressive. I was more worried about our security than that we had rats in our organization.
As for my father and Celestina, they postponed their trips until this security issue and threats were resolved. Like Moses had said before he left, I should be very careful with hiring people or allowing more alliances. Which I agreed. Having Dani in my life made me more vulnerable.
I already set my father and Celestina’s bodyguards, those people who had been with us for years, whom my father trusted to protect his daughter.
A sharp knock interrupted me from my work. I unlocked the door and continued working.
“Why are you here?”
“Geez.” She rounded to my desk and hugged me from behind. “I’m bored. Cee and Marco left. Magnus is working. Everyone in this compound is busy, except me.”
I met her gaze. “Once your voice is fully healed, you can work as much as you want as long as you’re mine every night.”
She licked her lips and dropped her gaze to mine. “I’ve missed you, Terzo.”
“I miss you, mia bella, but no. You—”
“Rest, rest, rest. What does my voice have to do with sex?”
I couldn’t help but chuckle. “I fucking want you everyday, but I’m concerned about your neck and chest. And your voice. I can eat your pussy but you can’t control yourself from screaming. I know you, Dani. So, have a little patience, beautiful.” I kissed her lips quickly.
“Can I stay here for a while?” She let go of me and went to the couch where we made love, and among other things.
I breathed deeply when my dick began to harden. “And you can’t definitely go on deepthroating me.”
“Geez.” She rolled her eyes as she lay down on the couch, tapping her fingers.
After I told her everything I found out, she cried and sobbed. She curled up in the hospital bed and stopped talking for hours. It was scary if she went into another breakdown or withdrew herself and completely stopped talking. But the doctor advised me to stay by her side, and that she trusted me.
“What?”
I blinked at her question. “What?”
“I don’t like it when you look at me like that.”
“Like what?” I stood up and went to her. I let it rest on my lap. It broke my heart every time I saw the bruises on her body.
“Like I’m so fragile or a lit candle slowly melting before you.”
“That’s not true.” I cupped her face and kissed her. “I thought of you as the strongest woman I’ve ever met. You shot me, remember?” I pressed the bridge of her nose when she wrinkled it before starting an argument. “Just to remind you that you stood up against me, Dani.”
“It was an accident,” she defended herself again as she rested her head on my thigh.
“Whatever. What I’m trying to say is, after what you’ve been through, what you’ve witnessed, you’re still here, strong, in one piece, unmatched, and you never lost your humanity. Do you know what I love about you?”
Her eyes squinted, and she waited.
“You stand your ground. You stand by your own principles.” I ran my fingers through her hair. What was happening right now, and I still got to hold her and kiss her, was a miracle. This was our second chance, and I was not going to waste my time not spending it with her.
“Thank you.”
“No need to thank me.” I paused for a moment before I asked, “Can I ask you something?”
“Okay.” She lifted her gaze to me. Those eyes, so terrified as I watched them through the footage. I still saw fear, but it was slowly slipping away. She was safe now, no one could harm her anymore. At least, as of right this very moment, but I would not rest until I found out who betrayed me and fed Francesco information.
“Do you remember something new?”
“You’re curious about the book?” At the hospital, she told me about the book his father was writing.
“Not anymore, but if you wanna find it, you can always count on me.”
She sighed. “Were they really my parents? Why now? After twenty years, why do I still remember them?”
“I don’t think what you’re starting to remember are false memories. As I saw their pictures, I could see the resemblance. Your father’s hair, their eyes, your mother’s nose, your skin, and you remembered their faces. You haven’t seen the images I showed you, yet you recognized them right away.”
“You’re right.” She rose to sit and looked right straight into my eyes. “Since the DNA result was negative, I wanna visit Ireland.” Before Moses left Italy, we got the result. I was ecstatic and relieved that that motherfucker was not her father.
I chuckled, shaking my head.
“Is the house still there until now?”
“I’ll ask someone to inquire about it.”
Her eyes widened as if she remembered something. “Oh, my God. I’m not even American,” she mimicked an Irish accent, making me laugh.
“Legally, you’re American. You have lived there for twenty years. Bloodline? Nope, but when you say Americans, everyone in America is mixed of all races.”
“Doreen and Cillian MacLynch. And my real name is still Danielle.” She beamed. “What about my grandparents?”
I shook my head. “They passed away a couple of years ago.”
“Let’s go to Ireland, but let me first watch The Irishman.”
“Let me make some calls.” I grabbed my phone, and it buzzed in my hand.
I checked the message from an unknown number.
