                    TERZO
I found my father under the debris. Throwing away pieces of wood and broken glass on top of him, I was beyond terrified when he didn’t move. He had cuts and bruises, blood on his forehead, his arms, his nose, and in his ears. I thought I was going to lose him. He must have hit his head from the blast.
I was grateful he regained consciousness right away, but what was more terrifying was the words he told me before we got out of the burning house.
When Dani asked me, I didn’t know what to tell her— the truth or maybe the truth was too terrifying for her.
I didn’t want to frighten her. “I don’t know, Dani. I’ll call you as soon as I get more information. I’m gonna ask someone I trust to do our own investigation.” I kissed her one more time before I walked out of the house.
“Let’s go,” I ordered at least seven of my men to follow the ambulance that was carrying my father and Alessio while I rode with Tristan and Gio in a separate vehicle.
I was glad Alessio was with my father when it happened. He wasn’t alone. I knew Papa was tough, who had escaped death many times, but that one moment, I thought I was losing him.
As we followed the ambulance route, I called Alessio, but he didn’t pick up. He must have lost his phone inside the house.
I dialed Massimo.
“Boss, we’re tailing the ambulance.”
“Block the ambulance. Tell the driver to drive to the safe house. If he refuses, throw him out and take the wheel. We’re on our way. We’ve arranged a medical team to take care of my father. You know where the safe house is. I can’t disclose the location over the phone.” I followed Mr. Braddson’s instruction and hung up the call.
After about an hour of changing three routes, we arrived at the safe house, a property owned by Mr. Braddson, where we used it when Giosue tried to take me out and kept my sister prisoner.
I hopped out of the vehicle. The rest of the guys went to check out the perimeters and guarded the house.
Several minutes later, the ambulance arrived with the same paramedics.
“Take my father and Alessio to the room downstairs. Monitor them while the medical team is on the way. Make sure they won’t die because your lives depend on theirs.”
Massimo watched them as they carried inside the house.
“How did it happen?” I knew Tristan had been wanting to break the silence since the car ride, but he was waiting for the perfect timing, till my father was safe.
I ignored his question. “Call Sergio to send me the footage of the delivery guy who delivered the parcel. I need the company and the man’s name.”
Tristan didn’t insist anymore. He did as I asked him to do. Right now, I was too furious to talk. I wanted to kill whoever brought the package inside the compound.
“Terzo, I know you have a lot on your plate right now, but let us handle the security. Go be with your father.”
“And do what, huh?” I glared at Gio. “I’m not a doctor, I can’t do anything to help him. I failed to protect my father. Who’s gonna be next? Celestina, Marco, my wife? You?” I pointed at him, then to Tristan. “Or you? All of you are not safe as long as you’re with me because wherever I go, deaths follow.”
“I’m sorry, boss, but we’re not going anywhere. We knew what we signed up for,” Tristan said. “Right now, you need us.”
The medical team just arrived with a cargo truck that carried medical equipment needed for the treatment. A spark of hope rushed through my chest.
“Thank you for coming.” I assisted them downstairs, where my father and Alessio were locked safely inside the steel door and thick concrete.
The door was also guarded, including two more inside. After they assembled the equipment, including the machines, they transferred my father and Alessio to the medical beds, and the doctor started examining them.
“Son?” My father’s voice was still weak.
“Papa.” I went to him, squeezing his hand. “You’re gonna be okay. Save your strength.”
“Where’s your sister and Dani?” He pulled out his oxygen mask.
“I sent them outside Sicily, hopefully they will be out of Italy in the morning.”
“You shouldn’t be here. I’ll be fine with our men. Go be with your sister and Dani, Terzo. They’d be safe with you.”
“No, Papa.” I shook my head. “I’m not going anywhere until I get the man who delivered the explosive inside the compound. I will interrogate him and find out who tried to kill us.”
“I know I can’t stop you, Terzo, but you have to be with them,” he insisted. The boys can’t protect Dani. They need you, son.”
I swallowed hard. Rage boiled inside me, mixing with guilt and dread. I shoved it aside and focused on the mission. “I promise, Papa. I will be with them soon.”
“This is not done by the Danattis. Arturo called me to say that they want to make peace with us to continue the alliance.”
“I don’t trust Danattis anymore, but I have a plan to earn alliances. Trust me, Papa.” I wiped off the dust on his hair and kissed his forehead. “Thank you. Let the doctor take care of you. You’re safe here.”
I gripped the doctor’s arm. “Treat them. Don’t worry about the money. If you need more supplies or medicines, inform me. I’ll get them for you.”
“Boss.” Gio came to whisper, “I have the footage. Marcelo is on the way to grab the guy.”
“Tell Marcelo to check the origin of the parcel. They have the sender’s name, address, and phone number. I want that guy, too.”
“Talk! I’m not gonna ask again. Who asked you to deliver the package? There’s no record in the courier! You’re not even a courier. I’m only asking this one. If you give me the wrong answer, I will blow your brain out!”
The man’s face was busted, blood dripping off his mouth. He might have loose teeth, too, but he gave me nothing that pissed me off even more.
“I told you—”
I took a deep breath and gestured at Gio. “Take over. Use any torture you know to get the information I need.”
Gio pulled the man’s hair back. “Tell me something, is he short, tall, white, brown, black, or olive-skinned? Is he old? Does he have an accent?”
My phone vibrated. Gio picked it up from my pocket. My hands were bloody. He showed me the caller ID. It was from an unknown number.
“Continue. Don’t stop until you get what I want.” I grabbed it and walked outside to answer the call. “Yeah?”
“Mio amico.”
My blood boiled upon hearing the familiar voice. This time, he was gleeful. I might be wrong after all. Not everyone deserves a chance. Someone once said, Evil can never be vanquished.
“You did this to us, didn’t you? I gave you a second chance, and the first thing you did was blew up my house into kingdom come, motherfucker! The next time I see you, I will blow up your brain!”
“Whoa. Siciliano, what happened?” Ruslan asked, seemingly surprised and concerned.
“Don’t fucking play games with me. You had your chance, and you blew it!” I hung up the call. My guilt congealed into self-loathing.
My fury simmered right to the surface. I wanted to scream, to punch the wall. I wanted to hit something, but the damage had been done, and I just released the monster out of its cage into the open. And he was out there for revenge.
My phone vibrated, a message from an unknown number.
TRUST ME IF I SAY I HAVEN’T DONE ANYTHING TO HURT YOU. THEY JUST RESCUED ME TEN MINUTES AGO. YOU ARE THE FIRST PERSON I CALL, SICILIANO BECAUSE I OWE YOU. YOU HAVE A FRIEND FOR LIFE. IF YOU NEED ME, I’M JUST A CALL AWAY.
I dialed the number. He picked it up instantly. “My father is hurt. Someone blew up my house, and I’m still trying to figure out who sent the parcel.”
“I’m sorry to hear that. What kind of explosive?”
“I don’t know. My father told me it was a parcel address for my wife,” I said ruefully.
“And you’re fucking insane to think I did that! Where is your wife? She’s not safe there. It’s either she’s the target of her father’s old acquaintances or one of your enemies.”
Fuck.
The Danattis?
“I suppose you went to Ireland. Who else knows?”
“No one. Just us.”
“Did you kill the woman who betrayed you?”
“She’s dead. I was thinking it’s the Danatti retaliating, but they wouldn’t use explosives. Her cousin, who’s replacing her position, just talked to my father and said that the family is making amends for her mistakes and wants to continue the alliance, but I won’t take their word for it.”
“If they have integrity, they would keep their word. Unless that woman left a lover.”
“Really? While she wanted to fuck me that day? I don’t think so.” I sighed. “Anyway, lie low for a while. Things are still hot.”
“We’re starting to regroup, get my men back from that asshole. If you need anything, you know where to contact me.”
Just as the call ended, I had another incoming call. This time from Grace.
Shit.
Gio came, looking like he had some good news. “Boss, that pig said, the man is old and has an accent, but he can’t make out if it’s Scot or Irish.”
