                    (Lily’s POV)
“What?”
All the hairs on my skin stood. Before I could speak again, the call ended.
Fear crawled up my gut and I physically shook…
No, no. This can’t be. Lamia and Zeus can’t be in danger, can they?
I slowly stood to my feet, just as Zion arrived in front of the table. His brows pinched in a questioning frown when he saw the tears that had gathered in my eyes. I turned and rushed out immediately, my heels clicking urgently on the restaurant floor.
The second the glass doors slid open, one of my protocols stepped forward without hesitation, opening the car door. “Drive to my kids’ school,” I muttered breathlessly to the man, not caring if he could drive or not. I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to handle the steering. He jumped right into it and the rest of the team followed behind us.
My pulse thundered in my ears as I picked up my phone to call Tobe.
It went to voicemail. I called again, and again, it was still voicemail.
A chill clawed up my spine… My hands were cold, my chest tight. I could barely sit still as the fear began to drown me. I stared down at my phone, the silent screen more terrifying than a scream.
Something wasn’t right.
Something was terribly wrong.
The streets blurred past, every red light was a personal torment. I gripped the seatbelt, my thoughts spiraling. What if something happened? What if my babies were…
No.
They'd be fine. They'd be safe.
When we pulled into the school grounds, the sky had dimmed with early evening light. My heart slammed against my ribs when I saw the headmistress, Mrs. Grace, stepping toward her waiting car.
“Mrs. Grace!” I rushed from the vehicle. “Please, where are my children?”
She blinked, surprised. “Ms. Lily? I— I thought they were already picked up.”
“Picked up?” My voice cracked.
She frowned. “Yes they have been picked up" However, I didn't see the person up close but I'm pretty sure that it must have been one of the authorized names on the list you signed.”
I stepped closer, panic gripping me tighter. “Please, Mrs. Grace... my kids might be in trouble. I need to see the security footage. I need to know who picked them up.”
Mrs. Grace hesitated, glancing at the guards. “Follow me,” she said quietly.
I was taken down a corridor, through a discreet door into a small room lined with security monitors. One of the school’s guards began rewinding the day’s footage.
My stomach twisted. My eyes were glued to the screen.
And there they were; Zeus and Lamia, their tiny hands in a man’s grip. They looked happy, unbothered and smiling with the man.
At first glance, he looked just like Tobe… but everything just screamed wrong. Ravena and Vaelith were already pacing relentlessly in my mind.
“Can you zoom in?” I asked, voice tight.
The technician did.
And that’s when my world stilled.
The man turned slightly toward the CCTV camera with a sinister smile, like he knew where the camera was and that someone was going to review it.
Then he turned with my kids, having on their backpacks… and that was when I noticed it. He was limping.
Tobe doesn’t limp. Tobe’s walking gait was different.
It felt like my whole word just shut down. Then my phone buzzed.
It was Tobe’s calling.
I screamed into the phone “Tobe! Did you pick up my kids from school?”
“What?” he asked, confused. “No. I just checked my phone and saw the 20 calls I’d missed from you. What’s going on?”
My breath ceased.
