(Lily's POV)
They were home.
I don’t remember how I got to them. whether my legs carried me or like my soul had broken free from my body and dragged me forward, but suddenly Lamia and Zeus were in my arms.
I kissed their foreheads, their cheeks, their soft curls… I was crying and laughing all at once. I held them so tight, afraid I’d hurt them. But they clung back, whispering, “Mommy, Mommy, Mommy,” like they’d missed me just as much.
Behind me, everyone exhaled in relief. The air in the room shifted. Dev stepped back, rubbing a hand over his face. Aria wiped at her eyes. Even Lucien’s shoulders relaxed a little.
Zion stood a few steps away, battered and breathless, his gaze locked on us.
Dev cleared his throat. “We found them at a playground.”
Zion nodded slowly. “They were just… sitting there, talking to each other. Like they were waiting to be found.”
I didn’t want to let go of them. I knelt with them still in my arms, brushing the dirt from their uniforms. “Babies, what happened? Where did you go?”
Zeus spoke first. “Uncle Tobe took us to the park!”
Lamia nodded eagerly. “He said we should play hide and seek. But he left us and came home.” she muttered with a frown and pointed accusingly at Tobe behind me.
Zeus pouted. “Yeah, he didn’t find us. But Uncle Dev and Daddy did!”
Everyone fell silent. I was too exhausted to correct them for calling Zion 'daddy', and Tobe was more horrified at the state of things.
“I was with Lily throughout the search,” he said slowly, voice low. “You all know that.”
I opened my mouth to speak when my cracked phone buzzed on the center table. Everyone looked at it.
The screen flickered. There was just private ID on it. My gut twisted.
I picked it up and answered on speaker.
Then the distorted voice came in again, this time eerie and clawing through the speaker like it had claws.
“You were lucky today. Next time, It’ll be you finding their corpses.”
A sharp gasp left Aria.
Tobe flinched, arms stiffening by his sides. His hands slowly curled into fists and he looked like he wanted to race through the phone and kill someone.
Dev’s head snapped toward the speaker, and in a blink, his hand was already fishing his phone from his pocket. His eyes narrowed, calculating, furious.
Lucien's stance shifted subtly, one foot sliding forward and his eyes narrowed. Zion didn’t flinch. His eyes darkened, burning holes into the phone like it had just threatened his soul. One muscle in his jaw ticked, slow and violent.
“Lastly,” the voice said “Stay away from Zion. He’ll be your doom.”
Then ding. The call had ended.
I stared at the screen, my hands trembling.
Zion had gone still.
Then, without a word, he turned angrily and walked straight out the front door. Lucien followed, calling after him.
“Why is Daddy going again?” Lamia asked softly, her lip trembling.
“Yeah,” Zeus added, his voice small. “Isn’t he going to stay with us now?”
“He will,” I lied. “Just not tonight.”
I kissed both their cheeks again, holding them tighter.
Nanny Sophia approached, arms open. “Ma’am, I can take the twins to rest if—”
“No,” I said quickly. “They’re staying with me tonight.”
Dev stepped into the center of the room, speaking to someone over the phone. “We need to trace that call. Right now.”
The house erupted into motion. A new team of security techs arrived quickly. Dev moved with authority, giving clipped orders as laptops were powered on, portable signal readers set on the table, and cords sprawled like tangled roots across the dining area. The hum of machines and low voices created a tension I could feel in my spine.
A man in glasses placed a triangular black device; something like a portable antenna, on the table and attached it to a thick gray laptop.
“We’re scanning cell tower pings,” he explained to no one in particular, fingers dancing across his keyboard. “Trying to trace the origin based on the call signal strength, duration, and tower bounces.”
A tech lady adjusted a screen where maps blinked in rapid succession. Digital pulses highlighted parts of the city in orange and green.
“Signal’s bouncing between relay points. They’re using some kind of scrambler or digital mask. But we’re filtering through it.”
Dev leaned over the map. “How close?”
“Couple more sweeps,” the man on glasses replied. “Give us a minute.”
I watched from the couch, arms around my sleeping kids. My heart thudded harder with every beep and flash of light.
Tobe stood at the edge of the group, tense and silent, arms crossed. He stepped forward after a while, pointing toward a new pulse on the screen. “That shape; could it be a repeater drone? I’ve been used to fake movements before.”
The tech man squinted. “Could be. Let’s isolate it—”
Then, like a breath being sucked from the room, everything went dark.
The screens, laptops and gadget.
“No, no, no,” one of the techs muttered, tapping keys, flipping switches. “Backup power’s not responding. It’s like... like the entire frequency was cut off.”
They tried everything: Power cycling, manual override, external reboots…Nothing worked.
Dev stared down at the mess of wires and dark screens. “This definitely isn't human work.”
I looked at my children, their faces soft in sleep on a couch.
This wasn’t just technology.
This was supernatural.
Dev sighed and dismissed the techs. They packed up quickly, the failure weighing on their shoulders.
Now it was just us again; Aria, Dev, Tobe.
“Thank you,” I said softly looking at each of my friends. “For finding them… For staying.”
I tried to stand, but Dev raised a brow. “Don’t even try. We’re staying the night.”
“Someone dared to threaten our own,” Tobe said, voice low and rough. “You think I’d sleep knowing that?”
“Exactly,” Dev added. “We’re not leaving you or the twins vulnerable. Not tonight.”
“They picked the wrong family to mess with.” Aria cut in, her tone firm.
I opened my mouth to argue, but then the tears welled again. I stepped toward them one by one, hugging Tobe first, then Dev, and then Aria. Each of them held me back tightly, no words needed. Just the warmth of their loyalty and presence sinking deep into my bones.
“Thank you,” I whispered.
Later, Aria and I woke the twins gently and took them to bathe. Lamia mumbled sleepily, rubbing her eyes with tiny fists, while Zeus let out a long yawn that ended in a squeaky sigh, stretching his arms sleepily.
When we told them they’d be sleeping in my room tonight, they became very excited.
After drying them and getting them into their favorite pajamas, we tucked them into my bed. Aria kissed their cheeks and whispered goodnight before excusing herself to rest.
I crawled into bed beside them, and they curled into me instantly.
I wrapped my arms around them like I was afraid they’d vanish again.
I whispered a prayer to the moon goddess.
But somehow I couldn't help but shake this feeling... That doom was still lurking in the shadows.
