(Lily's POV)
I kept waking up at night to check if Lamia and Zeus were still beside me.
I would sigh in relief each time I saw their tiny chests rising and falling in peaceful sleep, but the fear didn’t go away. It clung to me like fog—thick and suffocating. What if I woke up and they were gone again?
But morning came... Soft sunlight spilled through the curtains, and small hands patted my face.
"Mommy, wake up!" Lamia giggled, climbing over me.
Zeus kissed my forehead. "We’re hungry!"
I opened my eyes and couldn’t help but smile. I wrapped them both in a tight hug, burying my face into their hair. They smelled like sleep and bubblegum shampoo.
"Good morning, my babies," I whispered.
We got up together. I grabbed their tiny hands, one in each of mine, and opened the bedroom door. Aria and Nanny Sophia were outside and about to knock.
"Good morning," Aria beamed.
"Good morning, ma'am," Sophia added, smiling politely.
"Morning," I returned the greeting, eyes still half-lidded from lack of proper sleep. "How was your night?"
"It was good," Aria replied. "The kids slept through. You?"
"Restless," I admitted with a shrug.
She nodded in understanding. I looked around. "How's Dev and Tobe?"
Aria exchanged a look with Sophia. "Dev’s inside. He barely slept but he’s fine. Tobe… left sometime last night. He said he was going to see his mate—that something urgent came up. He didn’t want to disturb you and the kids. Dev spoke with him this morning. He’s fine and will be back soon."
I blinked. Tobe left to be with his mate? It must've been important.
"Alright," I said. "Thanks."
I turned to walk the kids to their bathroom when Aria stepped closer.
"Where are you taking them?"
"To bathe them," I said simply.
"No, you need rest," Aria said firmly. "Let us take care of it. You barely slept last night."
I hesitated. "I’m fine..."
"You’re not," she cut in firmly. "Please, Lily. Let us help you."
Her voice carried a gentle command. I looked at Sophia, who gave me a reassuring nod.
I gave in with a soft smile and hugged both kids tightly again before letting them go with them.
"Okay, I'll see you guys soon," I whispered, stepping back into my room.
The nap I took was restful and healing. I woke up feeling better for the first time in 24 hours.
Two days passed, and life settled into something that resembled normal. I returned to work, though I tightened security around my kids. They had security personnel wherever they went—even in their classrooms. The headmistress understood.
That afternoon, I was reviewing documents when my alarm buzzed, reminding me it was time to pick up the twins. I stood and grabbed my handbag just as my PA, Alora, knocked and stepped in.
"Ma’am, there’s a gift for you."
I raised an eyebrow. "A gift?"
She nodded and held out a small sealed box. It was black and white with my name inscribed in gold foil: To Ms. Lily.
"Where did this come from?" I asked.
Alora looked unsure. "Rita, our executive receptionist, said she stepped into the restroom briefly, and when she returned, it was on the front desk. It had your name on it, so she brought it to me immediately."
I stared at the box. My chest tightened.
"I told security to stop accepting gifts," I muttered. "No one was supposed to be able to drop anything off."
"Exactly, ma’am. We double-checked, but no one saw who brought it."
Panic whispered at the edges of my thoughts.
I took the box carefully. "Thank you, Alora. You can go."
She hesitated, then nodded and left.
The moment the door shut, I sat down and examined the simple, elegant box.
I peeled the seal slowly and opened it.
Inside was a single blank piece of parchment.
That was it. No write-up. No card. No message. Just blank.
I froze, breath hitching... Then I remembered.
Aunt Lamia once told me about a kind of witchcraft—Flame Letters. Messages that only revealed themselves in the presence of fire or sunlight.
I stood and walked to the large glass window. My heart thudded against my ribs as I held the paper against the light.
Slowly… ink burned across the page like invisible fire curling into words.
The handwriting was neat, bold and familiar in a haunting way:
“Dear Lily,
There are things you do not yet know about the past, about your children, and your enemies. I can answer all the questions in your heart.
I can reveal the one behind Lamia and Zeus’ Kidnap.
Meet me by 5pm today; at the Willow’s bookstore by Karis Landmark.
–Lydia,
Your Aunt Lamia Cousin.”
My fingers shook around the letter as I finished reading.
