(Lily’s POV)
As Marcus drove out of the quiet neighborhood, I sat in the backseat with my fingers pressed against the letter in my bag, but my thoughts were still back in the bookshop.
My heart was full of questions, but oddly I felt a sense of peace too.
Meeting Lydia gave me something I didn’t know I was searching for.
Closure for Aunt Lamia’s death… for the restless dreams and the memories that haunted me.
I exhaled, watching the soft gray sky slowly darken. Just as I was about to close my eyes and rest, Ravena’s voice stirred within me.
“We did well going to see her,” she whispered, gently. “She gave us clarity… and reminded us who we are, that we are important, chosen and capable of rewriting history.”
I nodded slightly, her words calming me. But then Vaelith hissed loudly.
“You speak of rewriting history, but you forget your place.” Vaelith Spat. “Without me, there is no prophecy. I am the darkness they fear; the one to make it all happen, and I will rise.”
“Oh please, you think all that mighty of yourself and feel that you can solely rewrite history?!” Ravena snapped.
Their clash was sharp and sudden, like metal grinding metal inside my chest.
The air around me tensed, and even Marcus glanced nervously at me through the rearview mirror.
Ravena continued “Needless I remind you that you’ve brought nothing but pain, and chaos. If you’re so proud of what you are, why not stay with your kind?”
“Because I love our host,” Vaelith growled. “And I’m not going anywhere.”
Their words echoed loudly in my mind.
I gritted my teeth. “Enough.”
Both voices fell silent at my command.
“I will not be torn in two by either of you,” I said quietly, but firmly. “This isn’t a battle between good and evil. It’s a battle for balance. I need both of you to co-exist, or we’ll fall into exactly what they want us to become.”
Neither of them replied, but I felt their presence retreat.
I closed my eyes, whispering into the silence, “Maybe this is why the Moon Goddess paired me with Zion. To bring balance, not war.”
The rain started slowly; soft droplets tapping on the windshield. By the time we turned into my neighborhood, the sky had darkened and the heavens opened fully. Rain streaked down in heavy sheets as we pulled up to the house.
Lights glowed warmly from inside. It was nearly evening.
The front door opened before Marcus even parked properly, and two small figures dashed into the foyer; Zeus and Lamia were laughing… My everything.
Aria stood behind them, holding towels, her hair tied in a messy bun and her smile as warm as the scent of home.
“Mommy!” they screamed in unison.
I stepped out and hugged them both tightly, burying my face into their damp curls. “I missed you two.”
“We missed you too,” Zeus pouted.
“Mommy, Aunt Lamia said you went for a cool meeting. Was it good?” Lamia whispered.
I chuckled and kissed their cheeks. “Yes, it was.”
We stepped in from the rain and I turned to Aria. “Thank you for everything.”
She waved a hand. “Don’t mention it. You needed to go.”
She instructed the maids to serve my dinner as the kids returned to theirs. I joined them at the table, my appetite small but my heart full.
Tobe still hadn’t come visiting since he went to see his mate. Dev had gone back to work days ago, but Aria stayed; quietly holding down the fort and watching my children like her own.
After dinner, Aria excused herself to finish some tasks for work. She had worked remotely because of me.
I took the kids upstairs for their bath. I used warm water, letting the steam curl around us as I scrubbed them gently.
My eyes caught sight of the spiral-shaped mark inside their upper-arms. The same mark that Zion, Zelda and their father have… I was glad Zion didn't see it those times he was with the kids. Because honestly, I wouldn't have known what to tell him or do.
If he was suspicious about the kids before, then this distinct, unmistakable mark would only sollidify it.
“Whoops! Thank you goddess.” I whispered, now drying them off. By the time I was wearing their pajamas, they were already yawning and dozing off.
Lamia soon fell asleep in my arms. Zeus clung to my shirt as I carried him into my room. I had made a new habit of us sleeping together… just until my fear of them taken away is gone.
I tucked them in, kissed their foreheads, and watched their breathing settle into soft little snores.
Only then did I get up, and headed to the bathroom to take my baths.
The hot water ran down my body like a balm, easing the tension from my shoulders. I stayed longer than usual. When I finally emerged in my pajamas, I walked over to the window.
That was when I felt it… a prickling at the nape of my neck.
A sudden chill in my bones.
I looked up, and saw a figure across the compound.
It stood under the edge of the rain-soaked garden. A hood covered the head, but I would recognize that hoodie and silhouette anywhere.
That hoodie was the same from five years ago in the cafeteria in school.
The figure raised it’s head slightly, and just as lightning cracked across the sky, I caught a glimpse of a woman’s face—sharp jawline, long black hair covering her face… Then her lips curled into a smirk on seeing me.
It chilled me to my bones.
I took a step forward instinctively, my hand on the glass.
And then she turned to leave… she didn't run, knowing that I was watching.
She limped slowly, and just vanished into thin air.
My breath hitched.
“Morgana.”
