(Lily’s POV)
The week slipped by faster than I expected, and before I knew it, Saturday had arrived.
Aria was still with us. At first, I thought she’d head back after a few days, but now… it’s pretty obvious that she likes it here. She’s formed a little routine around the kids, and seeing her laugh more and smile freely makes me happy.
Tobe and Dev had been off meeting their mate. I understand that these things are inevitable, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss them.
We’ve been through a lot together, and not having them around these past days felt like something was missing in the house.
The last time Dev and I spoke, it was midweek. He told me he was preparing for a dinner with his mate’s family.
His mate was Zelda; Zion’s sister… Of course, that meant he’d be seeing Zion. I told him to behave himself, to not ruin anything. He loves Zelda, and whether he likes it or not, Zion is going to be family.
Later that night, he called again. His voice had a smile in it. He said everything went well. That made me smile too.
As for Tobe, I’d spoken with him on a video call just yesterday. He looked relaxed, happy even. Said he met Rose’s mother and wanted me to meet Rose soon too. I didn’t know what to expect, but I was glad for him. He deserves all the happiness he can get.
That morning, just after breakfast, the twins said they wanted to discuss something important with me. Zeus folded his arms and gave me his most serious face, while Lamia pouted beside him.
“Mommy,” she began, “you promised to take us swimming.”
Zeus nodded solemnly. “And you haven’t. You’ve just been making those big men follow us everywhere, even in class… We don't do fun things anymore.”
I crouched in front of them, caressing Zeus’ face. “I know, babies. But that’s to keep you safe.” I whispered.
“But you said you’d take us,” Zeus whined. “And you always keep your promises!”
Their eyes were big and round and pleading. I sighed, defeated. “Fine. We’ll go.”
They squealed loudly, making my heart swell.
By the time we were packing their swimming trunks and sunscreen, Aria peeked into the room with a knowing smile.
“Going somewhere fun?” she asked.
“Swimming,” I said, shaking my head. “They cornered me.”
“Well,” she said, tossing her hair over her shoulder. “I’m tagging along.”
I laughed, and hugged her excitedly. It’ll be so much fun…
Shortly after, Marcus was driving us through the city, the car filled with laughter and music. Lamia and Zeus sang loudly to a song playing on the radio, even though they didn’t know the lyrics. Aria and I exchanged amused glances in the rearview mirror.
The pool was at a place called “Blue Petal Springs.” It was a charming resort I discovered at the edge of town a few months ago. It had everything: lush gardens, gentle music playing over hidden speakers, and the large pool that shimmered like glass under the sun.
We changed into our swimwear quickly.
Lamia wore a strawberry-pink one-piece with little heart patterns, and Zeus had red trunks with tiny cartoon wolves on them, along with a red cap and goggles to complete the look.
Aria stepped out in a burnt-orange bikini with a sheer matching wrap tied at her hips. As for me, I wore a black two-piece with a floral robe draped over my shoulders. I hadn’t worn a swimsuit in a long time. I’d forgotten what it felt like to just… have fun.
As we walked to the pool, I noticed more than a few heads turning our way—mostly men. One even tripped on his towel which caused Aria to raise an eyebrow and smirk. “Still got it.”
I laughed.
Lamia and Zeus jumped into the water right away, splashing and giggling. Zeus tried to act like a gentleman, offering his hand dramatically to Lamia like he’d seen in some movie, before belly-flopping into the water with a loud splash. I laughed so hard I nearly lost my balance.
We played games; Marco Polo, who could hold their breath the longest, and even water races. Aria was surprisingly competitive and didn’t let the kids win too easily.
I held onto the edge of the pool at one point, catching my breath. The sun felt warm on my skin, and for the first time in a while, I wasn’t worrying. I wasn’t looking over my shoulder or feeling like someone was out to get us. I was just… living.
A young man approached us later. He had a camera slung around his neck and a soft smile.
“Hi,” he said politely. “I hope I’m not intruding. I’ve been capturing candid shots for the resort, and I couldn’t help but notice your family. Would you mind if I took a few more?”
I looked at the kids. Zeus had goggles on upside-down, and Lamia was trying to climb Aria’s back like a dolphin. I smiled.
“Sure,” I said. “Go ahead.”
He captured a few shots of us mid-laugh, Zeus doing his weird little victory dance, Aria pretending to dive dramatically. When he showed me the photos on his screen, I was stunned. They were really beautiful.
“Can you take a few of just the kids?” I asked. “And then some of us?”
“Of course,” he said.
Lamia posed like a princess, standing on tiptoe but when Zeus tried to do the same, he nearly slipped. Then he posed like a superhero, arms crossed and chin high… and they just smiled more and do few. poses
Aria and I posed too. She pulled me close and whispered, “Let’s make them jealous.”
I laughed and tilted my head to her shoulder. Click. Click.
By the time we changed into dry clothes; casual sundresses for Aria and me, and shorts and tees for the kids, we were exhausted but full of joy. We stopped for ice cream before Marcus drove us home.
We didn’t expect to find anyone waiting.
But Tobe was standing at the entrance with a woman beside him.
She had deep brown eyes, and long hair flowing over her shoulders. She looked calm. Too calm.
My heart paused.
Tobe smiled. “Lily, Aria, I want you to meet someone… This is my mate, Rose.”
Every warning bell inside me went off.
Rose!
A cold chill ran down my spine.
Could this be the woman of the prophecy? The one to partner with me to make darkness rise?
She spoke softly, “I’ve heard so much about you,” she smiled, but there was something else in her eyes… something sinister.
