(Lily’s POV)
I didn’t blink.
I just stood there with my fingers curled around Lucien’s sleeve as Zion stared at me like I had just slapped him.
The air was heavy, hot and thick with tension.
Our schoolmates circled closer, their eyes bouncing between Zion and Lucien like they were watching a show.
Zion clenched his fists at his sides, his jaw tightly set. But Lucien? He didn’t flinch. Instead, he tilted his head like he was honestly confused.
“Why do you look so pained?” he asked loudly “She isn’t just my girlfriend, but my mate right?”
Gasps followed from the crowd. It was just the confirmation they needed that Lucien and I were officially dating. Many had thought after Zion’s announcement at the party that Lucien and I weren’t on good terms.
“That’s good for them, after all they’re mates.” Someone said
“Yeah, but why did it take them so long to agree to be together? And why is the prince looking like he’s pissed?”
“Lucien and Lily are perfect together. The moon goddess surely paired them both.” a girl whispered to her group of friends and they giggled.
That irked Zion further, and his chest rose sharply- his breathing’ uneven, as his beast struggled for control. A low growl reverberated from his chest and everyone took a step back in confusion. Aria, Dev and Tobe quickly came to stand behind me.
“He’s losing control,” Ravena panicked at the back of my mind.
“Let him,” Vaelith snapped. “Let him feel what it’s like to have a second option.”
Zion stared hard at me, not saying a word. His eyes were dark and soulless, strong energy waves stemmed from him as dark veins began to snake over his skin. I shook in fear, Ragnar was more in control now, and one wrong move would have the whole school in ruins and blood.
Hybrids don't have to shift before they're able to wreck destruction. Shifting is the last phase, and they become unstoppable at that phase.
Lucien swallowed and stepped back, his beast knew better than to push Ragnar’s limit. Besides I wasn't truly their mate.
Although I wanted Zion to be jealous, I didn't want anybody getting hurt because of me. Just when I tried approaching Zion to talk to his beast, Celeste moved to touch his arm but he snarled angrily at her and she screamed in fright.
Then he took slow calculated steps at me, and I struggled to maintain a good front, fearing what he'd do… when Celeste swallowed, and quickly shouted “Lily was once Zion’s sister! Adopted!” she said shakily “So he’s just being protective of her with his friend, that’s all.”
It was like a switch just went off my head. What did she just do?
She freaking told the school that I was once Zion’s adopted sister. I bet she didn’t only do that to save face but also to tie Ragnar’s hands into not claiming me or doing anything stupid.
Zion stopped in his tracks as his dark waves slowly extinguished into thin air. Celeste knew that no matter how angry a mate’s beast might be, they’ll never hurt their mate in any way— but rather protect their mate’s reputation.
Zion’s beast had a rethink, and slowly went back to his shell. I didn’t know how to feel about that… Celeste just made everything more complicated.
Whispers filled the air. “Wow, now it all makes sense…”
“For a second, I thought Zion was jealous and his beast was going to hurt us all.”
“Now I understand why he gave Lucien that death look. It’s simply how brothers are protective of their sisters… yes, that must be it.”
As Zion, Celeste and their friends turned to leave, the crowd slowly dispersed.
I overheard one girl telling her group of friends “But why didn’t anyone tell us earlier that they were related? We were only told that she shifted into a monster at the palace. If we knew Lily was anyway related to the prince, we would have been nicer.”
I bit my lips hard as I stared at the moving crowd when Dev patted my shoulder “Let’s get going,” he said, gesturing towards our car. I nodded, and Tobe and Aria followed behind us when Lucien’s voice suddenly stopped me in my tracks.
“Wait!” he said.
I turned to face him in confusion. “No goodbye kiss?” he asked, walking up to me.
He leaned in, and that was when I saw it— A glint around his neck. It was a pendant, but not just any pendant… it was the royal crest of the Kingdom. A double-moon encircled by seven stars. As a princess, I had once worn it as a brooch.
Then he leaned in, and pecked my cheek gently.
I shuddered.
“Catch you later, girlfriend,” he said casually, waving as he got to his car and drove off.
I turned slowly, my mind was spinning… but Aria was staring at me, and her eyes were teary.
