(Lily's POV)
I smiled faintly, my heart thudding beneath the weight of what I’d just seen.
“It’s beautiful,” I said softly.
“Can we stay here?” Zeus asked sleepily.
“Yes, baby,” I whispered, my voice trembling as I looked again at the drawing.
Goosebumps swept over my skin.
On instinct, I opened my arms, and Lamia and Zeus jumped into them without hesitation. Their small bodies curled into mine, warm and safe. Their presence grounded me, even as my thoughts raced, trying to make sense of everything.
Lamia pressed the drawing to my chest again, as if to remind me it was real. Still holding them, I gently eased us back onto the bed and asked, "Lamia, baby... what exactly did you see in your dream?"
She blinked up at me, her curls bouncing slightly as she nodded, her face serious.
"We were in a big garden, Mummy. The sun was bright and there were so many flowers—red ones, yellow ones! There was a big house like in our storybooks. Me and Zeus were running, and you were laughing. And there was a tall man with blue eyes like Zeus. He picked us up and made us laugh. You looked really happy, Mummy. We all did."
Her words made my chest tighten painfully.
I forced a smile and kissed her forehead.
"That sounds like a lovely dream, sweetheart."
I glanced again at the drawing as Zeus slowly sat up, rubbing his eyes.
"Mummy... when is our daddy coming back?"
My breath hitched.
I blinked at him, unsure of what to say. He looked up at me, blinking curiously, waiting. I had told them that he was far away, hoping they wouldn’t ask for more... but now I suddenly wished I told them he was dead.
But Zeus wasn't even done "Other kids have daddies that come to school," he mumbled, glancing at Lamia.
She nodded. "Yes, Mummy. They come to pick them, meet our teacher and come to our class party too. But only you come always.."
I took their hands, caressing it gently "I know, sweetheart. You'd see him soon." I swallowed, lying again.
Zeus hesitated, then added "Can you call him? I want to tell him about our school party next week. Maybe he can come this time."
His voice was full of hope.
It hurt more than I could ever put into words.
I tucked a strand of hair behind his ear and smiled softly.
"Your dad’s very busy, baby. But this time, I’ll be there, and I’ll make it extra special for you both. I promise."
Their faces didn’t brighten like I hoped. Zeus’s shoulders slumped, and Lamia looked at me with her brows drawn in, the kind of expression no child should wear.
I cleared my throat and changed the subject.
"Uhm... what do you guys think about seeing Uncle Dev and Uncle Tobe at your school party? It'll be fun."
Their moods shifted instantly.
"Yes!" Lamia squealed.
Zeus grinned and bounced on the bed, his sadness completely gone.
I laughed lightly.
"Okay, that’s enough bouncing, Zeus," I said, catching his hand. "You both should go meet Nanny Sophia for breakfast. I’ll join you soon, okay?"
"Okay, Mummy!" they chorused, jumping off the bed, still chattering.
"We’ll tell Nanny Sophia you’re coming soon!" Lamia said over her shoulder.
Zeus gave me a cheerful grin before reaching for his sister’s hand. I watched their little feet patter, until the door clicked shut behind them.
I sighed. That was so close.
They were growing, and their questions would only get harder. And I had no answers for the pieces of their lives I want to keep hidden forever.
I wondered what I'd tell them when their wolves begin to show out.
I sat on the edge of the bed and pressed a hand to my chest, taking a slow breath... "Dear Moon Goddess," I clasped my palms in plea, closing my eyes "Give me wisdom and strength in the days to come. Please help me."
Pushing to my feet, I went into the bathroom. I stared at my reflection; red eyes, pale face, dry lips... I looked like someone who hadn't truly rested in weeks.
I splashed cold water on my face, then brushed my teeth slowly. The minty flavor of the toothpaste barely registered.
My mind was still reeling.
Thoughts from last night flooded my mind... Zion’s face, the way he looked at me, Aria’s betrayal, and now Lamia's drawing... as well as their hope, their longing for a father.
It was too much at once.
I blinked away the fog in my head and reached for a towel, patting my face dry before heading back into the room.
A knock snapped me out of my daze.
"Come in," I said.
One of my female staff stepped inside, offering a polite bow.
"Ma’am, someone’s here to see you. They said it’s urgent."
My heart skipped.
I straightened.
