                    (Zion's POV)
I couldn't stay for the rest of the party after she left.
I left as soon as the last speech ended. My mind was too scattered to make sense of anything else... My supposed mate hadn't even spoken to me once.
Even after I followed her to the balcony, hoping for a glance, a good conversation, she'd ignored me like I was nothing. Like I was some disease.
Maybe I was being ridiculous. She didn't owe me anything. After all, I had a wife back home and a son. If Celeste was hitting on another man while I was away, I would be upset.
I needed to respect myself, and this woman. She must have a long list of admirers, given that she was very beautiful and curvy. However, the thought of her admirers made my stomach twist, but I couldn’t keep chasing someone who didn’t feel the same.
And then again, I was a responsible man. A husband. A father. This mate of mine felt nothing toward me. Maybe it was for the best, but the truth ached even to my soul.
Ragnar growled low in my chest, restless and wounded. I tossed and turned in bed... my thoughts louder than the silence around me... Her face, her scent, and the mate pull toward her was so strong it felt like gravity itself had chosen sides.
But none of that should matter. I have to let her go.
Eventually, sleep called to me and I gave in...
By morning, I made my way out of the room looking for Lucien when I spotted him standing in the corner of the house.
He looked like he hadn’t slept either. His brows were furrowed, his jaw tight as he paced slowly with his phone clutched in his hand.
He dialed, and dialed again and again. Man looked frustrated.
I stood there for a second before walking over and thumping his shoulder lightly.
"Aria, right?" I made a quick guess.
He gave me a brief look and nodded, the tension stiff in his neck.
Finally, he exhaled "…She’s angry with me because I kept it from her that I was the COO of the company," he said quietly. "I didn’t mean to hide it, I just didn’t know how to tell her after everything we went through. Besides, you know how Uncle can be," he said, referring to my dad, and I kept quiet.
My Dad could be extremely strict with his rules. I understood Lucien.
His voice was croaky. "Aria and I didn’t have the best start, given our family's history," he continued, "but I’m serious about her now. She makes me happy, man. Like... really happy. I want to be with her forever."
There was something honest in his voice. He was sincere with his feelings.
I nodded. "Then go for it. Don’t mess it up by letting pride win. If you love her, fight for her."
He stared at me for a moment before giving a small smile. "Thanks. I needed that."
His mood shifted slightly, and with a snap of his fingers, it was like something clicked in his head.
"Oh! I was supposed to show you around. You're officially CEO now, remember?" he said, nudging me.
"Can’t forget," I muttered.
"You need to know every arm of the company; the major projects, partnerships, the social impact arm... all of it. Virelux isn’t just about money, you know. We're involved in major sectors of the human realm."
I followed him down the hallway.
"We run a school," he said with pride. "One of the best in the city. The parents and kids love it. You’ll have to visit soon, especially now that you’re CEO. The press will eat it up."
I sighed, rubbing the back of my neck. "When?"
Lucien grinned with a knowing glint in his eye. "Next week. There’s a school party. All the parents and big shots will be there. It’s the perfect time to show your face again."
I raised a brow. "You mean parade myself like a prize horse?"
"Exactly that."
I groaned... But somewhere in my chest, something tightened.
A school party.
Strangely my mind flicked to her again.
