(Zion's POV)
Today was the day.
The day I would visit the school as the new face of Virelux.
A silent message to the people that I wasn’t just a figurehead CEO sitting in some golden office. That I was here, and involved, especially in the education of their children.
It was a calculated move. Lucien had explained it all... it was to win the hearts of the people in the human realm, and we could begin the real work of restoring balance across both realms.
I adjusted the cuffs of my suit as we walked through the marble-floored corridor of the mansion toward the massive garage.
The black car waiting for us gleamed beneath the morning light. Protocol guards flanked us on all sides, their serious expressions almost theatrical.
Human bodyguards.
I nearly rolled my eyes. I could crush half of them with a thought. If anything, they needed protection from me.
Lucien walked beside me, murmuring into his phone as usual. He gave me a brief nod before stepping into the vehicle.
I slid in beside him and looked out the window as the convoy pulled out. More cars behind us... always more.
The ride was quiet.
Memories crept in... I remembered what school was like for me. I was the golden boy in high school, the one everyone admired, with perfect grades... the future king.
Then Celeste got pregnant, and I did what was expected of me. I married her. Nothing interesting happened.
But now... everything was different.
I sighed as the car sped through the city. I shouldn't feel anxious, it was just school. Just children.
So why did my chest feel tight?
The moment we arrived, there were paparazzi everywhere; flashing their cameras, reporters shouting questions I had no intention of answering.
The bodyguards snapped into action, forming a wall around us as we moved through the sea of flashing lights.
The school had prepared with banners having our names, staff lined up in clean uniforms. I was first led to the high school wing, where the welcome was grand and rehearsed.
They sat me in a VIP section draped with gold and navy cloth, soft cushions beneath me. Lucien sat beside me, nodding at every official who came to greet us.
The party started.
Students paraded down the stage with banners of peace and leadership. There was a speech. Another speech. A choral performance.
Then came a dance.
A group of girls in glittery dresses took the stage. The music shifted... it was low, heavy bass... They danced. No, they swayed.
It wasn’t a school performance. It was something else.
As they neared the edge of the stage, a few of them stepped off and walked directly toward us. Toward me.
And then they danced, right in front of me... seductively.
My jaw tightened.
I glanced at Lucien beside me. He looked equally mortified.
"Humans..." he whispered, leaning into my ear.
I said nothing but just stared straight ahead and waited for it to end.
When the final pose struck and the applause filled the hall, I was already on my feet.
I had no patience for any more nonsense.
But before I could walk out, a robust man in a navy suit intercepted me. He was red-faced and sweating, clearly the school chairman.
"Your Excellency, please. There's one more wing to visit. The elementary school. The little ones are waiting."
I wanted to say no. My entire soul was already itching, but I gave a nod. "Lead the way."
We walked out of the building, to another building at the end of the school premises. Then straight through corridors lined with bright posters and crayon artwork. Security flanked us, and a few teachers joined, smiling nervously.
As we turned into the hallway, my feet stopped moving.
There were tiny footsteps... and then a little girl came sprinting toward me, her curls bouncing.
"Daddy!" she squealed, wrapping her arms around my legs.
I froze.
Slowly, I looked down at her.
Big brown eyes stared up at me with pure joy. Her scent was familiar, causing something deep inside me to stir.
Why did she feel like mine?
Then came a little boy, running with bright blue eyes. My blue eyes.
He stopped just a few feet away, hesitant, before stepping forward and wrapping his small arms around my leg.
Lucien stiffened beside me, eyes widening.
I crouched slowly, my heart pounding.
The little girl giggled and touched my face. "You came," she said.
And that was when it hit... Ragnar surged forward inside me.
"Pups," he howled.
My chest heaved. I shook.
"No. No. It can't be."
