                    (Zion's POV)
The children clung to me with a warmth I hadn’t known I needed.
I wrapped my arms around them instinctively, protectively. Their little hearts beat fast against me, their scents embedding themselves deep into my senses. It was overwhelming, raw— like something I had missed in forever.
Then it shattered.
Two men appeared from the crowd, and quickly yanked the children from my arms.
"No!" they cried in unison, reaching back for me with tear-streaked faces.
The men didn’t hesitate. They handed the girl and boy to a woman now running toward us, her heels clicking against the polished floor. Her arms outstretched, her face streaked with angry tears.
My mate.
I recognized her instantly now.
It was her.
I could see the girl in the woman. And the boy... he was a miniature of me.
The realization hit like a bolt of thunder.
"Daddy! Please!" the kids screamed, still trying to return to me.
A low growl escaped my throat before I even realized it.
I hated that the children were crying.
I took a step forward towards the men that had taken them from me. I was livid. They stood protectively between the woman and her kids, from me. Their gazes locked onto mine like twin daggers. Their shoulders were squared, and their stances screamed feral...
The air thickened.
My eyes blazed. I was two seconds away from tearing through them when a hand clamped down hard on my shoulder.
"Don’t," Lucien said under his breath, his voice sharp.
I turned my head, breathing hard. I could hear the small gasps from teachers, and see the pale faces of children peeking around corners. My domineering aura had enveloped the entire atmosphere, creating fear...
Lucien’s grip tightened. "You’ll expose everything. Look around you."
I followed his gaze.
The humans were frozen, and scared.
I forced myself to take a breath, to calm my beast from clawing out.
These men weren’t human, and neither was I. There was something eerily familiar about them.
The woman; my mate was holding the children now. Her arms encased them tightly, as though her body alone could shield them from everything.
Her eyes flicked to mine. She looked angry, shaken and betrayed.
I took another slow step back, unclenching my fists... feeling guilty.
What had I tried doing? I was about to fight some strangers over the children I had just met?!
She turned and walked away quickly, the children still crying in her arms.
And the men? They waited before following after her as though to make sure that I wasn't coming after them. One of them turned back and gave me a look. A look I would not forget. It was one of warning, of hatred... Of something deeply personal.
Lucien exhaled beside me, dragging a hand through his hair. "I’ll talk to them," he muttered, already moving. There was recognition and guilt in his eyes.
I whipped toward him. "You know them?"
He didn’t reply and soon, I was left standing there in awe of all that had just happened.
One minute the little girl had called me Daddy, and then her brother also joined to hug me... and then boom, they were yanked off my arms by some mean men.
And then my mate; the one I had been longing for, thinking about for weeks was here. The one, I didn't even get her name... She had the children. She was their mother.
Worse still, Lucien said he was going to speak with them like he knew them.
I turned in place, pacing like a madman as I went the other route, ignoring the chairman and his cohorts who now suddenly came to my side when the air was cleared.
My fists clenched as I walked with the bodygaurds, while Ragnar barked at me repeatedly to follow after the woman and her kids but I shut him down.
"Pups?" I growled "What the hell was that about?"
"I smelled our blood in them!" Ragnar roared. "Don't you feel it? They're ours!!"
I squeezed my eyes shut. "How? How is that possible? We only met their mother a week ago at the party!"
"I don't know... but I know what I smelt. I know what's mine!"
We got to our cars, and a bodyguard rushed to open the car door for me. I stepped in, still seething.
"They looked about four years old..." I yelled at my beast "There was no way I would have slept with my mate and not remember, right?"
Ragnar stopped prowling, and went quiet "Maybe I was wrong. Maybe... I just got confused."
The silence that followed was loud.
My beast. My ever-reliable beast was unsure.
Was something wrong with him? or with me?
Do we need to see a healer? or a witch that can help us if there was something wrong with us?
Minutes passed, and I sat still in the car, waiting for Lucien...
Lucien returned, looking solemn.
He walked slowly, hands in his pockets, eyes distant.
"How did it go?" I asked, my voice hoarse.
He didn’t answer right away.
"Lucien?" I repeated, a little impatient.
Then he finally looked at me as though seeing me for the first time. His voice dropped, "So... you’ve really forgotten about Lily," he said, not a question but like an information he just got.
I narrowed my eyes in suspicion "What are you talking about? Who's Lily?"
