Scott didn't try to fight it when Kelly practically threw him into Avi's backseat. He'd hoped to have a bit more time before the interrogation but maybe it would help take his mind off leaving Midge. Scott had asked a hundred times and Midge had answered back patiently that he was fine, that he had been left lots of times and knew what to do, that he believed Scott would come back for him, that yes, he remembered how to use his phone and would talk to him soon, that he wasn't scared, or worried or sad. He'd finally grabbed Scott's arms and told him in no uncertain terms that he wasn't a child. That had shut him up because he'd been treating him as one, even if he hadn't meant to. So he'd grabbed his suitcase and headed out, waving one last time as he got into his car.
"NOW, tell me everything" she said, her tone hushed enough that Avi and Kevin in the front seat wouldn't be bothered.
"I don't know how to treat him" he answered, still stuck on his earlier thoughts. "He's smart, and almost as old as I am but I treat him like he's 10 sometimes. He's innocent but has been through a LOT more than I have. He's a bit cat but almost all boy and he's learning to read already, Kake. He's working so hard at it and he's bright; hell he'll probably be reading Twilight by the time I get back."
"Doubt he'd like the whole werewolf thing, Dot. Carry on."
"You're right, bad choice for him. I honestly thought he was slow, or just not as intelligent as humans in general, but that's bull. He's probably smarter than I am; he's just uneducated which is a crying damn shame. He's the sweetest, most kind person I've ever met. He demands nothing but gives everything he has, no questions asked. He's so damn agreeable that sometimes I forget to even ask what he wants, and that pisses me off because it matters, obviously. He doesn't hold a grudge, not even if it's more than well deserved. The smallest things make him so incredibly happy that I want to do EVERYTHING for him."
"Closer... keep going."
"What?"
"I'll tell you when you're done. More dear, more."
"He makes me laugh and I've smiled so much this week that my damn mouth muscles ache."
"Not where I thought this was going but let's run with it. So, *ahem* is *THAT* the only reason you're achy?"
His mouth hung open and he knew he'd already given it away.
"Are you sure that's not INCREDIBLY stupid?"
"Not at all and I'm actually pretty sure it is. Look, I tried not to, really. He offered constantly and I turned him down over and over."
"Yeah, for what, a day? Day and a half?"
"No, more than that. Two I think." Scott pouted.
"Oh, in that case, you deserve a medal. Wow, such restraint. I take back everything I said."
Scott just shook his head, ashamed of himself. "I know. I'm sorry."
"I just don't understand, didn't you say that he'd been owned, hurt, whatever? He was a slave, right?"
"Yeah, but I didn't hurt him Kat, and we didn't sleep together or anything I... I just didn't stop him. I tried, trust me. Look, I know you can't get it, having girlie parts that I don't understand in the slightest, but that boy is fucking magic and the fact that I can even WALK this morning without falling over, or into a ditch, is a miracle. I couldn't form a coherant sentence for an hour afterwards and I'm not even kidding. He's...... that tongue.... my GOD."
"Stop. Stop now. I do NOT want to know. Girlie parts... You are such an ass. I am done with you Hoying, so done. But listen to me, and listen well: We are NOT finished with this discussion. Shit needs handled." She put her earbuds in and turned towards the window, leaning her head against Scott's shoulder.
He sent off a text to Midge and then kicked himself, realizing he probably couldn't read it so he called instead. "Hey" he said when he heard the happy "HI!"
"How are you doing?" Midge asked.
"I'm good. We're still driving, about halfway there. What are you up to?"
"I am drawing. I had a glass of milk and vacuumed the apartment and now I am working on a picture."
"Sounds great, thanks for cleaning up. Do you need anything? Have any questions?"
"No, I am fine SiiSscott. Sorry. I am trying."
"I know, it's fine. I just wanted to check in and make sure you were okay. I'll try to call again before the show and then definitely after, before bed. You can call me if you need me and I'll pick up as long as I'm not performing."
"Okay. Thank you for thinking of me, for calling. It is nice to hear your voice."
"You too. Bye Midge." Somehow the call had made him feel better and worse at the same time. Midge seemed fine, but he wasn't sure he was.
After they'd checked into the hotel and made their way to the venue for a run-through and sound check, then had dinner and FINALLY peformed, Scott finally got a chance to have a private conversation with Midge. The phone rang four times and went to voicemail, so he waited as long as he could which was all of three seconds in his panic, and called again.
"Hello" Midge answered "I am sorry I am late."
"It's fine, is everything okay?"
"Yes, just fine. How are you? How was your show?"
"It was amazing, went really well. The crowd was really energetic and into it and I had a blast. How was your day?"
"I have not done much since you called last time, just worked on my drawing and played the reading game. I had some food and now I am in bed. Is it okay, that I sleep in your bed?"
"Absolutely. Wish I was there. Not only does this bed suck but it also doesn't have you in it."
"No, it does not. I am here."
"Are you being smart with me?"
"I... it was a joke. I am sorry."
"No, no, it's good. I don't quite have your sense of humor pegged yet, but I'm getting there. Look, we're going to try to leave early tomorrow, Kevin has a thing to do so I should be home by lunchtime, okay? I should get some sleep and I'll call you in the morning."
"Alright, I will talk to you tomorrow. Oh, I almost forgot, is it okay if I use some tape?"
Scott chuckled "No, absolutely not. Kidding. Seriously Midge, what's mine is yours. Use all of it if you want."
"I do not need all of it, I do not think, but thank you. Goodnight Scott."
"Goodnight Midge. Sleep tight."
