My head felt heavy as I mumbled, "Who... who are you?"
The stranger didn’t reply. Instead, his arms wrapped around me, pulling me close with surprising tenderness.
Who was he? And why was he here?
My thoughts spun, but exhaustion weighed me down before I could make sense of anything. Pregnancy had left me constantly drained, and within moments, I slipped back into sleep.
When morning light spilled into the room, he was gone.
For weeks—ever since Nathan dropped the divorce bomb—I hadn’t slept through the night. But last night? I’d slept like the dead.
Had it even happened?
A flush crept up my neck at the memory.
Then I spotted it—a glass of water on the nightstand. I never left water there. Curious, I reached for it.
Underneath, a note: Drink the honey water when you wake. I’ll come tonight.
Almost on instinct, I took a sip. The subtle sweetness of honey coated my tongue.
A shiver ran down my spine.
Who was this guy?
My eyes darted to the curtains—wide open. Had I really left them like that?
I crossed to the window. The apartment buildings weren’t crammed together, and my floor was high enough that no one could just... peek in.
A neighbor? But who?
I mentally flipped through faces—none fit the man from last night.
If he really planned to come back... should I call the cops?
Except... he hadn’t hurt me. Not even close.
