Nathan Evans got hauled off by the cops for assault. While I was recovering in the hospital, my ex-in-laws showed up out of nowhere.
They tried to bribe me—offered me money to write some bullshit "Letter of Forgiveness" for Nathan.
I lost it. Screamed at them until they scrambled out of there. A piece of trash like Nathan didn’t deserve prison—he deserved a damn grave.
Theo Valentine walked in right as they were leaving, fresh off work and checking on me. He took one look at my rage and immediately stepped in.
"Hey, hey—don’t let them get to you, Evelyn. Think about the baby…"
His voice was soft, soothing. When his hand brushed my belly, something about the warmth of his touch felt… familiar.
Lately, I’d been obsessing over the similarities between Theo and the Masked Lover. His timing that night had been too perfect.
I’d tried poking around before, but Theo swore he’d just been passing by. Said he saw my front door open, went to close it, then found signs of a struggle.
"You helped me once, Evelyn. I owed you. So when I saw something was wrong, I didn’t think—I just acted."
He sounded so damn sincere. Nothing like the cocky, mysterious man who’d slipped into my home that night.
Apart from their similar builds and that quiet gentleness, I couldn’t connect the dots.
Eventually, with Theo hovering over me like a worried puppy, I got discharged.
My belly kept growing.
And my mind kept circling back to him.
But he never came back.
I missed him. Missed the man behind the mask so much it ached.
His absence left me restless. I needed to know who he was.
So I set a trap.
That night, I left my curtains wide open.
My bedroom had a huge bay window—usually, I kept it covered when I was alone. But not tonight.
I dressed to kill, every move calculated.
My eyes kept scanning the darkness outside, wondering where he’d watched me from before.
The bastard was good at hiding. Half an hour passed, and nothing.
Just when I thought my plan had failed—there it was. That damn whistle.
This time, I flicked on every light in the room.
When he stepped inside, I turned my back, pretending to pout.
"Are you mad at me?"
His body pressed against mine, warm and solid. He took my cold hands in his, rubbing heat back into them.
"I’ve been busy. That’s why I stayed away."
I didn’t even know why I was upset—or why he felt the need to explain.
Amused, he turned me around, tilting my chin up.
Now.
My hands shot up, ripping off his mask.
"Theo! It is you!"
Shock flashed across his face—he hadn’t seen this coming.
His smirk vanished, replaced by panic.
"Evelyn, I—"
All that confidence he’d had while masked? Gone.
I stared at him, one question burning in my mind.
"Your eyes were black before. Why are they brown now?"
Theo hesitated, cheeks flushing.
"I… didn’t want you to recognize me. I wore contacts."
I exhaled. That’s why something had felt off.
Theo fidgeted, terrified I’d kick him out now that I knew.
"I’m sorry, Evelyn. I never meant to scare you."
"I love you. I’ve loved you since the day we met."
"I asked around about you. When I found out you were married and pregnant, I backed off."
"But then I heard about the divorce. I was worried about you being alone, so I…"
Turns out, Theo had fallen for me a year ago.
By the time he worked up the nerve to say anything, I was already engaged to Nathan.
So he watched from a distance—until he heard about the divorce.
Then he bought binoculars. Started keeping an eye on my house.
And one night, when he saw me alone…
He couldn’t resist. Put on a mask, broke in—but never to hurt me.
"Oh really? You didn’t want to do anything?"
I smirked.
Theo dragged a hand through his messy hair, avoiding my eyes.
"I—Evelyn, I’m sorry. I’ll go."
Go? Oh no. You don’t get to walk away now.
I grabbed his sleeve, then slid the mask back over his face, giving him a slow, wicked smile.
