                    Eryx
Lying against me, Verena was breathtakingly beautiful in my arms. She had finally completed her first semester at Alphacrest University Medical School. Admiring the sparkling 10-carat diamond, I reached for her left hand, caressing each finger in the moonlight. I was madly in love with that woman. My father envisioned a lavish wedding for us, but such a celebration would necessitate extensive preparation. I wanted to marry Verena right away.
The sooner the better, I did not like that Adela looked as though she wanted to speak against me proposing, but she refrained from doing so yesterday morning. Something about that woman, not sure why, does not sit right in my spirit. Although I made sure to get her and Grandma Wynn's blessing, Adela was not someone I would ever see myself getting close to. I knew I was hiding something, not sure what, but I found out, but I would rather just leave that headache where it is.
"Why are you not sleeping, Eryx? You have to go to the office in the morning", Verena wakes up to stare up at me with a question in her eyes. I kiss her forehead as I smile down at her.
"Good thing I'm the boss, but I'm taking a rain check tomorrow and not going in. I have more important things to handle that require my full attention".
Verena shifts her hands up my chest, "What could you possibly need to handle that is requiring you to miss work?". I reach for her left hand, "I was thinking about going to Vegas to elope". Verena quickly sits up in bed as she straddles my body.
"Are you serious? I thought I was going to have to start making wedding preparations". I shake my head, "No need for that, sweetheart, Dad wants to have a lavish wedding to show us off to everyone". Mostly to everyone within the mafia world, but I refrain from sharing that piece of information with her.
"That is nice of Mason to want to pay for the wedding, but I just do not want to be stressed. I would rather we just go ahead and get married and start our lives together as a married couple".
I felt a sense of relief that Verena and I were on the same page about getting married. Although she had no idea the true reason why I wanted to get us married as soon as possible, I'm glad she was on board with it. I kiss Verena's lips for several moments before I break away.
"I guess we need to be leaving then".
Verena's eyebrows furrowed together in confusion, "When exactly did you plan for us to elope?". Without breaking a sweat, I pull back the covers and get up from my seat in the bed while holding Verena in my arms, "In the next two hours or so". Verena squeals in excitement, "Oh, Eryx, I love you so much, but what the hell are you expecting to find a wedding dress in less than two hour?s".
"Cheri,e stop worrying about your wedding dress already getting that already handled, freshen up, meet me downstairs in 30 minutes so we can head out on the jet". Verena kisses me passionately and then jumps out of my arms as she runs into the bathroom.
"I'm getting married", she squeals in excitement. I walk out of the master bedroom so she can get ready. Just as the Verena turns on the shower, I walk out of my bedroom, downstairs, before finding my way to the hidden doorway that leads to the dungeon on the estate property. I press my hands against the wall before a laser beam uses facial recognition software to allow me access to the dungeon. I made sure to steer Verena away from this part of the mansion, I did not want her trying to figure out how to get down here.
It was too dangerous. Just as I make it down the long stairway, my father is leaning against the brick wall with his arms crossed.
" Marriage is a beautiful thing to experience when you have it with the right woman, but also it will allow you to maintain a strong foundation with other mafia and cartel leaders who think to cross now that you are about to get married". Dad had been preaching to me for over a year to get married, and now it is finally happening.
"I know how important marriage is to you, but I want to keep this lifestyle far away from Verena". Dad frowns at my statement.
"Son, I understand trying to protect Verena, but some things you won't be able to hide from her. She will ask questions. She will be able to sense when something is wrong. You two will be living under the same roof, it won't be this whole she lives here and you're there. You need to tell her about who you truly are". I rub the side of my neck with my hand.
"I'm not sure if I am ready to reveal my true identity to Verena. Dad shakes his head and then stares off into space. "I never once kept your mother away from my lifestyle; she knew everything that I was doing. We worked as a team. Hell, if it wasn't for her, we wouldn't have all of this wealth. You need to come clean to your soon to be wife, it's already bad I can sense her damn mother doesn't like you".
I snort, "I kinda figured you were going to pick up on the tension between Adela and me". Dad places his hands in his pocket, "I'm sure she probably knows who we are from the glare she was giving you as well as me".
I shrug my shoulders, "I'm not marrying Adela, I'm marrying Verena".
Dad squints his eyes, "How much do you know about Verena?".
"I know she is truly innocent. The girl has been sheltered her entire life. She knows nothing about the mafia. She is oblivious to pretty much everything that we are a part of".
Dad sighs, "Looks can be deceiving, don't think that woman will stay that way forever".
I have a wicked grin on my face at this point, "I hope she remains that way so she will never know the secrets I keep hidden away from her.",
"I truly hope you don't break that girl's heart".I wave my dad off, "That will never happen". Dad has a sorrowful look in his eyes. "I said that once to your mother decades ago, now look where I am now". I walk over and press my hand against Dad's shoulder.
"Pops, I got everything under control. Let me handle this". Pops looks at me as if he is hesitant to believe anything I say. "I'm going to trust this son, but if you mishandle that girl, I will gladly help her break you". I have a sinister look in my eyes.
"Is that a threat, old man?". Pops has a ruthless yet deadly look in his eyes as he stares back at me.
"Nope, I never make threats, only promises". He then pats my shoulder, "You have a Good night."
