Verena
I did not expect to see so much aggression at the first meeting with the Sinclairs, but here we are. I'm not sure if Davian realizes how of a psychopath my husband is, but he's about to find out. Eryx places the champagne flute on the glass coffee table and places his arms behind the couch, in a relaxed stance opposite of Davian, who looks as though he is running on fumes, his breath is labored, his pupils are dilated, and he clenching his phone tightly in his hands as he glares over at Eryx who does even look phased. "If I were you, Sinclair, I would lower my voice if I were you". Davian looks shocked as much as I do, like we are not on our turf, like Eryx can't just go around ordering people around, like he is playing a dangerous game.
"You come into my home disrespecting me, Vallea." Davian tries to walk toward Eryx, but Ryen stops him, placing her hand on his chest. "Babe, come down, let's hear what he has to say. Don't jump to conclusions immediately". Ryen then leans forward and whispers something against Davian's ear as he looks at her curiously before looking at Eryx and then at me. Davian and Ryen take a seat on the couch stationed near the far right of the room. "You know me better than that, Davian, I've nothing but the utmost respect for you until you decided to send your little brother to do your dirty work". Davian frowns, "I did not send my brother to you to spy on you, if anything, I wanted to be done with him altogether. He wasn't cut out to be in the chaotic world we both are a part of". I cannot believe what I am hearing right now. What type of man allows his younger brother to be used as a pawn? Maybe Eryx wasn't the only monster in this mafia world. I am starting to see more clearly now.
"Dav, I think it would be best if you and Eryx have a conversation privately, speak more freely about whenever you two need to address". Ryen has a concerned look in her eyes as she looks at Davian, but sneers over at Eryx. Eryx opens his mouth to speak, but I take hold of his right hand, caressing it gently, hopefully signaling him not to engage in this mind game, Ryen is trying to bait Eryx into. Not going to happen, bitch. If Ryen wanted to play checkers, I was going to play chess. "Ryx, I think that would be a good idea for you to talk in private with Davian". I then kiss his lips just the drive the point across. Eryx stares back at me, speaking with his eyes that I know he refuses to say out loud. Just wait until I get you alone again. I suddenly shiver, thinking of what they might want to do with me. I look over at Ryen and make sure to soften my voice a bit so that it sounds welcoming, 'We need to catch up, girl, it's been ages since we've seen each other".
Ryen gets up from her seat and walks over and takes hold of my hand. Her hand is cold and clammy against mine, and I make sure to train my reaction not to frown at the sudden discomfort. I glance over at Eryx for reassurance, and he leans down and kisses my cheek before touching the ends of my curls. I get up from my seat as Ryen pulls me out of the room, and as we walk down the hallway, she sighs in relief. "I'm sorry, Verena, but I needed some fresh air, you know. Your husband is a bit too tense for my liking while mines is just as fucking dense as they come".
I follow Ryen into the kitchen, where the sweet aroma of vanilla welcomes my nostrils. I take notice of the baked goods sitting on the kitchen counter. Chocolate chip cookies, red velvet cake, strawberry chocolate-covered berries, and a pitcher of freshly squeezed lemonade. Ryen reaches for a chocolate chip cookie, but before she can take a bite, I find myself asking, "Why did you not tell me the truth all those years ago, in Paris, about Eryx being in the mafia?". Ryen looks at me and groans before she leans her body against the kitchen counter.
"Verena, I'm not sure if you are aware or not, but your husband is quite dangerous. I mean, I could have told you at the time who he was, but that wasn't my place to let the cat out of the bag. Your husband threatened me". My eyes widen in shock, "He did what?". Ryen nods her head in response, "Yes, I take too kindly to threats, so I kept my distance from you, not on purpose but because Eryx is an asshole. I wanted to tell you, but I just couldn't. Sorry, babes". Ryen then reaches for my hand as still trying to take in what she just revealed to me.
"I understand". There was so much I could say, but I chose not to. I was not going to be vulnerable with Ryen at this time. I was good at reading people, and I could tell there was more to the story regarding why Eryx threatened her, which she refuses to tell me more about. Eryx doesn't go after people just because or make threats. He usually will mind his business unless someone messes with his money or his family. I'm not sure what Ryen did to piss Eryx off, but I will find out the truth. "I don't want to waste our time together discussing my husband. Give me a tour of this beautiful home you have". Ryen smiles as she finishes eating her dessert before beginning to walk through every nook and corner of this massive estate in the mountains.
Just as we make it outside to finish the tour of the mansion, Eryx marches over to us. "There you are I've been looking all over for you". Eryx has my coat in his hands and quickly places it over my shoulders. "Oh, how sweet of you to do that", Ryen says with a bitter tone I do not take a liking to. Eryx ignores her as he stands next to me he placing his arm around my shoulder. "You ready to go, Cherie". Just as I am about to respond with a yes, Ryen interrupts. "Davian and I would love for you guys to stay over for our dinner party tonight. It will just be a few of Davian and I's close friends".
Eryx does not like to be around people who do not know him quite that well, but the only way we can find out the truth is if we play this game right. "Of course, we would love to stay over", I find myself saying as I can feel Eryx staring at me as if I have lost my damn mind. Ryen squeals with excitement, "Awesome, since you guys will be coming to the dinner party, there is no need for you to leave. You can even spend the night". I take hold of Eryx's hand, gripping it tightly, trying to find a way to ground him so he won't blow our cover.
"Sure, that's even better". Ryen's phone begins to ring as she takes it out of her pocket. "Excuse me, I need to take this, ", she says, motioning toward her phone in her hand as she walks off in the opposite direction where Eryx came.
"I guess I see you want this to be a bloodbath tonight". I then squint my eyes up at Eryx. "You are going to be on your best behavior tonight. No fighting, no weapons. Let's just observe the scene". Eryx grunts and places his hand around my lower back as he leans his head chin against my forehead he sighing, not liking the fact he has to give in to my demands. "The things I chose to do for you".
"It's called compromise. Stop thinking everything has to be your way all the time. Just because you are a mafia leader doesn't mean you get to boss me around. I can hold my own". Eryx looks me over as if he is seeing me for the first time. "You continue to surprise me every day, Cherie. Just this once, I will allow you to boss me around, but if this little plan of yours goes haywire, I won't hesitate to take matters into my own hands and it won't be that talking shit like to do, I'll just use my guns to get the message across".
I pull him out of his embrace. "I guess we have a dinner party to get ready for". Eryx takes hold of my hand as we walk back to the Sinclair estate. As we begin walking back to the estate, "Did you find out anything from Ryen?". I nod and then stop in my tracks with a sinister smirk on my face. "Yes, I did. I found out that you threatened Ryen years ago, telling her not to tell me that you were in the mafia". Eryx has a deer-in-the-headlights look on his face.
"Cherie, I can explain," as he tries to reach for me, but I pull out of his reach."No need to explain. This is not the time for that right now". Eryx places his hand on my shoulder and places his hand on my cheek. "If I could go back and change". I stopped him before he could finish, "Don't try to say things you don't mean. I did not know what I was signing up for back then. We can't go back and change the past".
"I wish I could, at times, go back to change the past. Maybe we would be happy and in love". I bite the corners of my mouth, refusing to respond because if I do, I might just have another outburst. This is all still too much. Fuck. "Don't worry about it. I told you I'm not going to run away again". Eryx looks as though he doesn't believe a word I'm saying and has a sorrowful look in his eyes. "You might not run away again, but that doesn't mean your heart won't".
