The moment I saw the number—one I used to know by heart—I powered off my phone, yanked out the SIM card, and snapped it in half. Just like that, my last connection to Dallas was gone.
Meanwhile, Finn was losing it. He hurled his phone against the wall, the screen shattering on impact.
"Faith, bravo. You bribed the media to spin this miscarriage lie just to get my attention? Now you're playing the victim?"
He turned sharply and caught Darcie standing there, tears welling in her eyes.
"Is this my fault?" Her voice was barely above a whisper, shaky with emotion. "Did I ruin things between you and Faith? Maybe I should just leave. Maybe I never should've gotten involved. Even this baby… maybe it's karma. Poor kid, stuck with a worthless mother like me."
Finn pulled her into his arms before she could finish, his voice softening. "Darcie, none of this is on you. Faith's the one who can't let go. She's manipulative, and she's lashing out because she lost."
He brushed a tear from her cheek. "I've already booked an appointment with a top nephrologist in Miami. We're flying out tomorrow. There might still be hope for your condition."
Darcie's face went rigid. "Miami?"
Finn didn't seem to notice her hesitation. "Yeah. Your body's not stable enough for a pregnancy. I need you close to the best care possible." He squeezed her hand. "Plane tickets are bought. We leave in the morning."
Darcie forced a smile. "Fine. Whatever you say."
As for me? The second I landed, I was about to find a quiet corner to make a call—when suddenly, strong arms wrapped around me. The familiar scent of fresh grass and cedar washed over me.
"Marry me, future wife."
Before I could even turn around, the news flashed across the airport's giant screen: my fake miscarriage, my so-called retirement. Archie's eyes locked onto it.
I couldn't look at him. "You can still back out," I said flatly. "Everything they're saying? It's true."
I grabbed my suitcase and walked away.
But Archie caught my wrist, his grip almost painful. His voice cracked. "Faith, you're running again. Seven years ago, I let you go. Not this time."
"I don't care if it's true! None of it matters!"
He held up the household registry. "We've got the paperwork. You brave enough to marry me?"
I'd kept it together through every humiliating moment with Finn—but Archie's words broke me. The tears came fast, unstoppable.
"Don't cry," he murmured, wiping my cheeks. "The courthouse is waiting. Everyone's there."
His voice dropped. "I missed seven years of your life. I let you suffer. That's on me. But from now on? No one hurts you. Not while I'm breathing."
He drove us to the courthouse. The ride home after getting the marriage certificate was dead silent. My dad didn't say a word the whole way.
So when we finally reached the house, I spoke first. "I'm sorry."
I braced for the yelling, the disappointment.
Instead, Mom's tears fell harder than mine.
