Archie Westbrook, the golden heir to Miami's most powerful real estate dynasty, stood nearby like a silent sentinel.
Paparazzi lurked in the shadows, their cameras disguised but ready to pounce. Spotting their lenses, I instinctively reached for Archie's arm. "Let's go," I whispered, not wanting to drag his family into another scandal.
But Darcie saw her opening and pounced like a viper. "Miss Harper," she sneered, "how pathetic - first stalking Finn for years, now following us to Miami? Hiring some actor to smear me?" Her voice turned theatrical. "What will satisfy you? My death?"
Finn pulled her close, his protective embrace saying more than words ever could. "Easy, darling. I believe you."
The moment the words left his mouth, Darcie went limp in his arms like a fainting Victorian heroine.
"Faith!" The doctor's urgent shout cut through the chaos. "We need blood now! This woman has thalassemia and kidney failure!"
I opened my mouth to protest, but Archie gave a subtle head shake. "Save your breath," he murmured. "Let the show play out."
As they wheeled Darcie away, she suddenly "revived," clutching at Finn like a drowning woman. "Take me home! I don't want to be here!"
Archie's laugh was colder than Miami winter. "Oh no, sweetheart. With parasites like you, we run full diagnostics. Wouldn't want any... complications going unnoticed." He turned to the medical staff. "Scan her thoroughly. Every inch."
Darcie's Oscar-worthy tears flowed freely. "They'll hurt the baby, Finn! Don't let them!"
Finn stroked her hair with sickening tenderness. "Just cooperate. If anything happens to my child..." The unspoken threat hung heavy.
Despite her theatrics, they dragged Darcie away. The crowd swelled - even Aunt Elodie arrived, drawn by the commotion.
Finn intercepted her. "Dr. Westbrook! We met in Dallas. You know my wife's condition - thalassemia, kidney failure. She needs your expertise."
Before Elodie could respond, Darcie emerged, her face the color of spoiled milk. The doctor handed Elodie the report. "Kidney failure?" Elodie's brow furrowed. "Both organs are perfectly healthy."
Finn snatched the papers, his confusion turning to dawning horror. "Both? You said one was removed after the kidnapping!"
Darcie's tears turned on like a faucet. "I lied because I love you! But the baby - it's really yours!"
Archie's timing was impeccable. "Funny math. You've been back what - three weeks? Yet you're nine weeks pregnant." He turned to me with mock formality. "But this is Mr. Brooks' private circus. Shall we?"
As Finn moved to follow, Elodie's voice cracked like a whip. "Faith brought me soup. Did you steal it, you little rascal?" She playfully swatted Archie's arm.
I intervened gently. "My fault - I spilled it."
Elodie patted my hand, warmth returning to her voice. "Enough suffering, dear. Let this troublemaker handle things from now on." Her eyes twinkled. "Now hurry up and get married - I'm waiting for my daughter-in-law's coffee ceremony."
