When I reached the bottom of the stairs, something crashed down in front of me—our wedding photo, shattered on the ground like worthless trash.
Noel's petty way of showing his anger.
I didn't flinch. Just stepped over the broken glass and kept walking.
Back home, my mother's portrait in the living room stopped me cold. All the strength drained from my body. I collapsed to the floor, sobbing uncontrollably.
I hated myself—for not seeing through Noel, for dragging my mother into this nightmare, for wasting three years on a man who turned our marriage into a cruel joke.
Then the call came. Home care.
"No," I answered flatly. "My mom is dead."
After hanging up, I called a lawyer to start the divorce. But before I could take another step, Noel burst into my apartment.
"Cornelia!" he roared. "You got Rian fired? What the hell is wrong with you?"
"I don't know what you're talking about," I said, trying to slam the door shut.
Too late. Two men shoved past me, barging inside.
"What are you doing?!" I shouted, panic rising. "This is my home! You can't just—"
Noel grabbed me, his grip bruising. "You said your mom's dead, right? Let's see for ourselves. Tear this place apart!" He smirked. "I'll make sure everyone knows what a lying, scheming—"
"Stop!" I fought against him, my voice breaking. "She's gone! She's already gone!"
He hesitated—just for a second—then threw me to the ground.
"You bitch!" he snarled, face twisted in rage.
I hit the cabinet hard, pain shooting through me as they ransacked the apartment. Drawers ripped open, furniture overturned—then the sickening crack of my mother's portrait smashing against the floor.
Nothing. They found nothing.
Noel's expression shifted to disbelief. He stalked toward me, eyes icy.
"Cornelia," he said slowly, "if anything happens to Rian, you and your mother will regret it."
"Where is she?!" he demanded, voice raw with fury. "Where are you hiding her?!"
My gaze locked onto the shattered portrait under his shoe. Something inside me snapped.
I lunged, sinking my teeth into his leg. "You bastard! I'll kill you!"
His men yanked me back, pinning me down like some rabid animal. I thrashed, helpless, humiliation burning through me.
Noel stumbled, clutching his leg. Then he finally noticed the black-and-white photo beneath his foot.
For a second, he just stared. "What… is this?"
"That's my mother!" I screamed, voice ragged. "She's dead! She died the day after you left!"
