Tsk. A living, breathing person with no self-respect. If I were her, I'd be too humiliated to show my face in public.
She's free now, but you—you shameless witch! How dare you still walk this earth?
I ignored every one of Brianna's messages. Instead, I saved every video, every screenshot, and marched straight to the police station the next morning.
The officers listened carefully, then called in Brianna and her agency for questioning.
When Brianna showed up, the waterworks started instantly. She played the victim, sobbing about how she'd never hurt Mom, how the videos were just fakes meant to provoke me.
Tears streamed down her face as she put on her best heartbroken act. "Nellie, I took such good care of Auntie when she was alive. I never slacked off, not even for a second. Didn't she always sing my praises to you?"
She kept going, voice dripping with fake remorse. "Okay, fine—we've had our issues, and yes, I faked those videos out of anger. That was wrong, and I'm sorry. But dragging the police into a personal feud? That's just petty."
The officer gave me a sympathetic look. The videos were low-quality, easy to dismiss as staged. With Mom gone and the agency washing their hands of it, the case was going nowhere. He suggested I drop it.
I refused. I consulted lawyer after lawyer, but none could turn the tide.
As I left the station, I spotted Noel in the distance. Brianna sprinted to him, clinging to his arm like a lovesick puppy. "Noel! You came!"
He muttered a half-hearted "Yeah"—eyes glued to the ground, refusing to even glance at me.
I watched them, and suddenly, the pieces clicked. I stormed over. "You're behind this, aren't you?!"
Noel flinched, but Brianna answered first, smirking. "Behind what? Noel and I have been close for years. Of course he'd help me!"
Her smugness didn't even anger me—just made me sick. My voice shook. "Noel, Mom treated you like her own son. And this is how you repay her?"
Brianna scoffed. "Oh please. Who'd want to be her son? Don't flatter yourself, sweetheart." She glared at me. "Cornelia, if it weren't for Noel, you and your mom would've been rotting in some gutter. You've been leeching off others your whole life. Stop acting so high and mighty!"
"Rian, enough!" Noel snapped. "Don't talk to your sister-in-law like that!"
Brianna huffed and stomped off.
Noel turned to me, nervous. "Nellie, what she said was out of line. I'm sorry." He studied my face, desperate for forgiveness. "Don't worry. After today, I'll cut her off completely. She won't bother us again."
I stared him down. "You knew."
He froze.
"You knew how Brianna treated Mom. You knew those videos were real. And you still helped her cover it up." My voice was quiet but raw. "All that talk about them being fake—you were protecting her this whole time."
"Nellie, listen—" He grabbed my shoulders, pleading. "Your mom's gone. Fighting won't bring her back. Rian's young—rumors like this could destroy her life!"
"WHAT ABOUT ME?!" My vision blurred with tears as I screamed. "Noel, have you ever once thought about what this does to ME?!"
