You unpacked your bags and places your things in your locker, setting aside your toiletries and sleep items, completing your small ounce of space in the survey corps dormitories
Yesterday you graduated; you were 19th place in your class. Not terrible.
But Annie was 4th.
You were so proud of her; she worked so hard and for fourth place amongst almost a hundred trainees. She joined the military police, and though you were sad to be away from her, you were happy that she would live a nice life, and remain safe from the horrors outside the walls.
Though you wanted more than anything to be there to protect Annie, you knew she could take care of herself.
What scared you was that she was going to forget you.
Your fears were calmed a few days later when an unexpected item arrived.
"Letter for cadet L/n" your name was called one day at breakfast, along with a few of the other cadets.
You thought it was a letter from your family, you having written them not long ago. Your eyebrows shot up in surprise however as you opened it and skimmed to the bottom, seeing Annie's name.
You were still standing in tear middle of the floor like an idiot when someone cleared their throat, signalling you to sit back down in your seat. You smile sheepishly and head back over to the table you shared with Connie, Jean, and Sasha; tucking away the letter to read as soon as you could.
"Who was that from?" Sasha asked from across you.
"U-uh, nobody" you stutter out, hiding your face from your friends.
Suddenly the letter is snatched from your pocket by Jean; you launch forward to try and grab it from him but he hold it way out of your reach as he skims it. His eyes widen when he sees the name.
"ANNIE LEONHART!!????" He shouts, and a few people look towards your table.
You sush him loudly and snatch the letter from his hands, your face hot with embarrassment.
"Why the hell did Annie Leonhart write to you?" Jean asks incredulously. "She's kind of weird?"
"She's not weird" you retort hotly. "She's just reserved." "She's also my friend and wants to keep in touch with me" you tone haughty and bold, your best attempt to hide your utter embarrassment.
"Yeah, friend" Connie snickers as he elbows you on the side, eyebrows wiggling up and down. You huff and smack him across the head with the paper, eliciting a "hey" from him and laughs from Jean and Sasha.
As breakfast was called to an end, you walked quickly from the mess hall towards your room. You sat on your bed and hastily read Annie's letter.
It was short, but she told you about her roommate in the Military Police, how she's been settling in, and the types of things she's been doing. She even asked about you once or twice, and you felt your heart twist at her thoughts of you. With the spare time you had left before training, you wrote a response to Annie, talking about the scouts and how bad the food was. It was lengthy: three whole pages, but you wanted Annie to know how you were doing, and to wish her well without being awkward.
Over the next few weeks, the two of you exchanged several more letters; most of them silly and fun, but some genuine inquiries about one another. Every couple of weeks the two of you would end up with a synced day off and you would meet inside wall Sina and walk around, mostly in silence.
You didn't mind it however; it felt good to be around Annie again, you missed her presence, and your heart would race whenever she brushed your side or made direct eye contact with you; her brilliant blue eyes staring into your own e/c ones. You would spend the hole day together in a relaxed state of being, just enjoying each other's presences. Though she would often be tense or lapse into a far off silence, you never minded and were always there to support her in whatever she was feeling.
Though you missed being away from Annie most of the time, you decided that military life wasn't so bad.
