"Selene, you've got it all wrong. Marina just had a little low blood sugar. I was only helping her for a second."
"Really?" My voice was flat, dripping with skepticism. "How thoughtful of you."
"Selene, just wait in the car. I'll be right there."
I hung up and leaned back, closing my eyes.
He didn't take long.
When he slid into the driver's seat, one side of his face was flushed, a smear of blood at the corner of his mouth. Looked like Marina had bitten him when he went in for a kiss.
I handed him a tissue.
"You're bleeding."
Lucian checked his reflection and forced a smile. "Must've bumped into something," he lied smoothly.
Same old act. Every time he got caught, that same fake grin.
I arched a brow, unimpressed. "Funny. Did you bump into Marina's teeth?"
His face went rigid, irritation flashing in his eyes before he schooled his expression. "Selene, don't be like this. I told you—she had low blood sugar. It wasn't what you think."
I didn't bother responding. Just closed my eyes and let silence fill the car.
Back home, Lucian disappeared into the shower.
His phone buzzed on the table.
A message from Marina—along with a hotel address lighting up the screen.
I glanced but didn't touch it.
His password used to be my birthday. Then the new intern happened, and suddenly, it didn't work anymore.
I'd made sure she was let go. After that, Lucian's attitude toward me shifted.
But of course, one woman leaves, another takes her place.
Lies were like quicksand. Once you stepped in, there was no climbing out.
I was just so tired.
I dozed off on the couch until the bathroom door creaked open. Lucian emerged in his robe, snatching up his phone.
The second he saw Marina's message, he froze. His eyes flicked to me, uneasy.
"It's late. Why are you still up?" he asked, feigning nonchalance.
"Just resting."
Relief flickered across his face when he saw I wasn't upset. He unlocked his phone, and I caught the faintest smirk before he wiped it clean.
"Selene, there's an emergency at the office. I have to go."
"Okay," I said, not looking up.
He hesitated, then launched into an explanation like he'd rehearsed it. "Production scheduling issue. I need to handle it personally."
He was already halfway to the closet, changing in record time. When he returned, I hadn't moved. He hovered in front of me.
"Get some rest. I'll call you when I get there."
I rubbed my eyes. How much longer would I have to play along?
Standing, I grabbed his coat from the couch and held it out. "It's cold. Take this."
Lucian stared at me, thrown. After a beat, he took it.
"Selene…"
Suddenly, he pulled me close, his voice softening with something almost like regret. "Stay here. I'll be back soon."
I cut him off. "Go. Don't be late."
I helped him into the coat, adjusting the collar like I always did.
But this time, I knew.
The second that door closed behind him, so did our marriage.
