After Lucian stormed out, I went through my usual nighttime routine, washing up with deliberate calm.
But this time was different. There was no crushing despair, no suffocating helplessness like before.
They say the second time hurts less—turns out, they were right.
A man that broken wasn't worth a single tear.
I climbed into bed and shut my eyes.
Sometime in the dead of night, a frantic pounding at the door jolted me awake. I stumbled to answer it, still half-asleep, and found Ryan Carter—Lucian's college buddy—practically dragging him inside.
I rushed to help, guiding Lucian to the bed and fetching water while Ryan hovered, watching me with an odd intensity.
Then, out of nowhere, he dropped the bomb.
"Selene, Marina really wrecked him back in the day. That's why he lost it when he saw her today."
The name Marina hit like a gut punch, shredding Lucian's lies to pieces.
"Back when Lucian was just scraping by, she dumped him for some rich guy. He never got over it. If it weren't for you pulling him up, he'd still be drowning."
I forced a smile, my throat tight.
Once Ryan left, I hurled the damp towel into the basin, water sloshing everywhere. It even splashed onto Lucian's ruined clothes, already reeking of booze and something sickly sweet.
That's when I saw it—a bright red lipstick stain on his collar. Fresh.
He'd showered and changed, but now it was all over him again.
Bile rose in my throat. I turned to leave—
Then his hand clamped around my wrist.
"Marina… Don't go… Please, give me another chance—"
His drunken begging twisted my stomach. I wrenched free and bolted to the bathroom, heaving until my vision blurred. Only when my knees stopped shaking did I dare face the mirror.
The woman staring back at me looked pathetic. How had I let myself drown in this filth for so long?
Decision made. Tomorrow, I'd call a lawyer.
The next morning at work, office gossip snagged my attention: Lucian had hired a new assistant.
A coworker leaned in, whispering, "She's so fragile—couldn't even manage Excel. But Mr. Blake insisted. You think he's… into her?"
Marina's face flashed in my mind.
I forced a bland smile. "No idea. Let's not speculate."
Right then, his voice cut through the chatter. "Selene. My office."
To everyone here, I was just another employee. Our marriage? A well-kept secret—his idea, to avoid "distractions."
The second the door shut, he yanked me into a hug.
"Selene," he murmured, "I need to talk to you."
"About?"
"Marina's job hunting. I was thinking of bringing her on here. What do you think?"
I stepped back, ice in my voice. "Sure. Whatever."
He kept going, nervous energy crackling. "Actually, I'm short on assistants. I could train her myself—get her up to speed."
Then, like a guilty kid, he added, "…Are you mad?"
I tilted my head, deadpan. "Why would I be? You're helping an old friend."
He searched my face, sweating. "About last night… Ryan and I got carried away. We didn't… bother you, did we?"
The desperation in his eyes was almost funny. He wanted to cheat but still needed my forgiveness?
"Not mad," I said flatly.
His brow furrowed. "Really? You slept in the guest room!"
A dry laugh escaped me. "You spent the night moaning her name. What was I supposed to do—sleep through it?"
