I retreated to my parents' house after everything went down.
The moment they heard about my divorce from Lucian, they hit the roof.
"I told you that man was trouble!" Mom spat out, shaking her head. "Good riddance, honestly. You're better off without him. Take some time to clear your head, sweetheart. And when you're ready, I want you to take over the new overseas projects at work."
I nodded, agreeing to handle it—when I was ready. The next morning, I headed to the office to wrap up my resignation and hand off my workload.
Of course, the second I walked in, there they were—Lucian and Marina.
So, she hadn't left after all. Or maybe he'd dragged her back.
Whatever. I kept my cool, focusing on tying up loose ends with my colleagues.
Then Lucian sauntered over, that infuriating arrogance plastered across his face.
"Selene. You owe Marina an apology. Do that, and we'll pretend yesterday never happened."
I nearly choked on my own laughter. "Apologize? For what? Giving her money for a ticket? Or giving her the guts to walk away from you?"
Marina burst into tears on cue, playing the victim. "Lucian, please… just let me go…"
He immediately stepped between us, shielding her like some damsel in distress.
"Selene, how dare you? You think throwing money around fixes everything? You humiliated her just to push her out of my life. Are you even human? Our marriage isn't some transaction you can buy your way out of."
For a second, I was speechless. Then a bitter laugh escaped me.
"Marina, you really think I humiliated you with money?"
Lucian wrapped an arm around her like she was made of glass. "Selene, apologize. Now."
"Don't flatter yourself, Lucian. Why don't you ask your precious Marina why I gave her that money in the first place? Oh, and fun fact—my recorder was running the whole time. I've got every word she said."
Marina's face drained of color. Before I could blink, she crumpled to the floor in a dramatic faint.
Lucian lost it, scooping her up like she was seconds from shattering.
I rolled my eyes. Her act was pathetic, and I wasn't sticking around for it.
But of course, Lucian blocked my path again.
"Apologize to her right now! She's not well—are you trying to make her worse?"
"Are you serious right now?"
His voice exploded with fury. "I said apologize. Now!"
I'd never seen him this unhinged—not even close. But for Marina? He was completely unraveling.
"Lucian, you actually think you can order me around?"
He lunged, hand raised to strike.
I caught his wrist, fury burning through me. "I'm done letting you push me around. I've already quit. So let's make this official—sign the damn divorce papers."
His rage flickered, but he still didn't move. "What divorce papers? Who said I'm divorcing you?"
"Get this through your head, Lucian—I'm divorcing you. Oh, and you might want to pack your things. You're moving out of my house. As for all the money you blew on hotels, dinners, and shopping sprees with your little side piece? Don't worry. My lawyer will handle that too. I'm taking every penny back."
