After walking out, Lucian blew up my phone with endless calls until I finally blocked his number for good.
The moment I quit my job, I dove headfirst into the family business. We were in startup mode with a new division, and I was drowning in work. With zero bandwidth to deal with divorce drama, I handed everything off to my lawyer.
Then the messages started rolling in from former coworkers:
[Selene, it's a circus since you left. Marina's strutting around like she's Mrs. Blake now. Makes me want to gag.]
[She's got a nasty comment about everyone behind their backs. Totally insufferable.]
[Half the office is drafting resignation letters.]
I typed back coolly: [Job market's brutal right now. Ride it out until things stabilize.]
It wasn't just colleagues - even our longtime suppliers were hitting me up:
[Selene, what the hell's going on over there? New management? Everything's gone sideways.]
I explained I'd moved on, which shocked them. Every single one said they'd rather work directly with me.
In the middle of this chaos, my lawyer called - Lucian was refusing to sign the papers and demanding to see me. Against my better judgment, I agreed to meet, with legal backup in tow.
The café meeting was surreal. When Lucian shuffled in, I barely recognized the shell of the man I'd married. Dark circles, rumpled clothes, that sharp Wall Street polish completely gone.
"Selene," he said, voice cracking, "I've done nothing but think. I was wrong. I'm so sorry. Please come home."
I arched one unimpressed eyebrow. "Let's skip the performance, Lucian. We're here to finalize the divorce."
He collapsed into his chair like a deflated balloon. "Why are you being like this? Yeah, I screwed up - lots of guys do! I'm trying to change! Why can't you just—"
"Stop." My voice cut through his whining. "This isn't about forgiveness. There's no trust left. No love."
His face went sheet-white. "But I still love you."
Too little, too late. The words meant nothing now.
My lawyer smoothly intervened. "While we're here, Mr. Blake, perhaps you could explain why Marina still owes my client five thousand dollars?"
Lucian blinked like a confused owl. "What five thousand?"
A bitter laugh escaped me. "You really thought she'd disappear without a payout? Turns out your going rate's just five grand."
With theatrical timing, my lawyer hit play on his recorder. Marina's voice spilled into the café:
"Selene, I'm desperate! Lucian's blackmailing me - be his mistress or he ruins my career! He wants a million, but I can't... Please, just loan me something to get free. I swear I'll pay you back!"
The blood drained from Lucian's face. He shriveled in his seat like a punctured tire, all his lies exposed in Marina's trembling voice.
