As our new business skyrocketed, I became a frequent flyer, jetting between countries to oversee factories and operations.
Dad assigned me a new assistant - Lance Mitchell, a bright-eyed college grad who stood a head taller than me, buzzing with energy and an ever-present grin.
He became my right-hand man through the whirlwind of expansion, tackling every challenge with surprising competence. Before long, we'd developed an easy camaraderie.
One day over coffee, he casually dropped the question: "So Selene, rumor has it you're getting divorced? What's the story there?"
11:28 AM
"Nothing dramatic. The feelings just... faded."
Lance quirked an eyebrow, flashing that trademark smile. "So what does catch your interest these days?"
I gave his boyish good looks a wry glance before changing the subject.
Months later at an industry summit back home, I found myself surrounded by old partners swapping war stories.
The conversation inevitably turned to my former company. Heads shook as they described Lucian's crumbling empire - departments in chaos, finances bleeding red. I kept my polite CEO smile firmly in place, refusing to engage.
That evening's gala brought an unwelcome reunion. Lucian materialized like a bad penny, desperation rolling off him.
"Selene, please - I was wrong. I'm nothing without you. Come back."
I raised a palm like a traffic cop. "Mr. Blake, that ship has sailed. Let it go."
"I've cut things off with Marina for good! I'll do anything—"
A bitter laugh escaped me as I turned away... just as a glass of cabernet exploded across my chest.
The entire ballroom gasped. Marina stood there, trembling with rage.
"You keep playing hard to get," she shrieked, "but everyone can see you're still chasing him!"
I dabbed the wine from my designer gown with icy calm. "Actually darling, it's your husband who won't take no for an answer. Now about my dress - this Valentino costs $1.2 million. Expect my lawyer's invoice tomorrow."
When she lunged at me, Lucian intercepted with a stinging slap across her face.
"Get the hell away from her!" he snarled.
Marina clutched her cheek, mascara running. "You'll regret this!" she spat before storming off.
As Lucian turned back to me, I shoved him hard enough to stumble. "Sign the damn papers. If not, my lawyers will bury you in court with evidence of every affair. Your choice."
The crowd parted as I strode out, leaving a trail of whispers in my wake.
