My fork froze halfway to my mouth as another wave of sounds from the bathroom made my ears burn. Who knew noises could be so... visceral? Part of me was morbidly curious—what did that even feel like?
When Nathan had ordered me to arch my back, I'd wanted to disappear. But Sophia? She sounded like she was having the time of her life.
The sudden appearance of the nurse nearly made me jump out of my skin. "Temperature check," she said, thrusting a thermometer at me. "Let's see if that fever's gone down."
It took her repeating herself before I snapped out of my daze—just as another muffled moan escaped the bathroom. My face flamed as I shot a panicked glance toward the door. The nurse, who couldn't have been older than twenty-five, just wrinkled her nose. "Family member in there? Sounds like a bad case of constipation. Might want to visit gastroenterology when she's free."
I choked back a laugh. "Thanks," I managed.
The bathroom finally fell silent—for about thirty seconds. Then round two began in earnest. Footsteps passed by in the hallway. Were they seriously this bold with me sitting right here? Couldn't they wait until they got home? Was making up for lost time really this urgent?
I dove into Sophia's bag like my life depended on it, fishing out earbuds and jamming them into my ears. The moment music flooded my brain, I could finally breathe again. Peace at last.
By the time they emerged—looking as put together as if they'd just stepped out of a business meeting—I'd finished my entire meal. My cheeks burned remembering those shameless sounds. I couldn't even look at them.
Ryan gave a casual wave on his way out. Sophia settled beside me and picked up her fork like we were just having a normal lunch.
I cleared my throat. "So... you and Ryan... how often...?"
She took a sip of oatmeal, eyes sparkling. "Daily. Unless it's that time of month."
"Daily?" The word shot out of me like a bullet. "Isn't that... excessive? What about your health?"
"Pfft." She waved a hand. "We're both gym rats. More than enough stamina. Honestly? It's perfectly normal for us. We get checked regularly—picture of health." She tilted her head. "What about you and Daniel?"
My throat closed up.
"Don't tell me it's once a month," she pressed. "That's practically malnutrition! A woman needs proper... nourishment. You know that, right? Real happiness needs both emotional and physical fulfillment. Skip the physical part and you'll age like milk—applies to men too."
A bitter laugh escaped me. Once a month? With Daniel, I'd never known that kind of happiness. The only time had been with Nathan. The memory turned my stomach.
The confession tumbled out before I could stop it: "Daniel might have... performance issues."
Sophia's shriek nearly made me dive under the bed. I shot a terrified glance at the door—this wasn't exactly hospital hallway conversation material.
I'd carried this shame for so long. Never told a soul. The weight of it crushed me.
