The heat of passion cooled, leaving behind nothing but cold, hard reality.
Since Isabella Winston had drawn her line in the sand—no more of Nathan Roscente's wandering hands—maybe this was my chance to finally cut ties. This affair had to end before it destroyed us both.
He strode back into the hospital room and settled beside me, his arm draping possessively over my shoulders. "Tired?" His voice was low, satisfied. "Rest. I never pegged you for such a fast learner. You were... incredible. At this rate, I might never let you go."
I scoffed, shooting him a sharp glance. "Aren't you engaged to Isabella? Or do you just not care if she finds out?"
Nathan hesitated for half a second before flashing that infuriating smirk. "She won't. Not if we're careful."
I shoved his arm away, my voice tight with anger. "Don't. What even are we? If you didn't have that damn video, do you think I'd be here? Let's just end this. No more contact. You have a wedding to plan, and I have a husband. We're only dragging each other down."
Every word felt like pulling teeth.
I refused to think about the pleasure—the way my body had responded to him. Because if I did, I might never break free.
Desire was natural, but it wasn't everything. And yet, here I was—lost in the dark, wondering if there was still a way back.
Nathan's gaze turned glacial, sending a shiver down my spine.
"Evelyn," he said slowly, "are you sure you won't need me anymore?"
Silence.
The air between us thickened, suffocating. I kept my eyes down, unable to face him.
Then, without warning, he pinned me against the bed, his mouth crashing into mine in a kiss that burned. Just as my resolve began to crumble, he pulled back abruptly.
"Twice now," he murmured, his breath hot against my lips, "and not once have you asked me to delete that video. You enjoyed it. What a hypocrite you are. A woman as starved for touch as you—one kiss and you're already falling apart, yet you dare say you want to end this?" He let out a dark laugh. "Let's be clear—you need me far more than I need you."
With that, he was gone, the door slamming behind him.
I thought he didn't understand. But his words had sliced straight through me, exposing the ugly truth.
He was right. I was lost. I'd never known pleasure like this—never known how easily my body could betray me. Even now, the memory of his touch had my pulse racing, my skin aching.
The emptiness swallowed me whole again. I slumped against the headboard, dazed, until the distant memory of my phone ringing pulled me back. Daniel Evans had called.
I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to clear the chaos in my head.
The moment I called back, he answered instantly.
"Evelyn, listen—it was my idiot coworker. He hung up on you, turned off my phone, and hid it! There's only two of us at the site. I had to hunt down a landline, but you didn't answer. When I finally got my phone back, I tried again—nothing. I was losing my damn mind—"
I cut him off, my voice brittle. "Then explain the text."
