My breath hitched as I peeled off my clothes, letting them fall carelessly to the floor until I stood bare before him.
Oliver Langley's smile was still boyishly shy, his cheeks flushed. "Evelyn… you're so soft, so perfect."
The way his eyes crinkled at the corners made my chest tighten—there was something disarmingly sweet about a man like him.
I hooked my arms around his neck and jumped into his embrace. His hands gripped my hips, and I clung to him like a vine, legs wrapping around his waist.
His lips crashed into mine, his tongue teasing, his kisses growing reckless as they trailed down my throat, over my collarbone, before finally closing around one aching peak. A sharp gasp escaped me as heat coiled low in my stomach, wetness pooling between my thighs.
A dark, vengeful part of me wished Daniel would walk in right then—let him see.
He didn't love me, so it wouldn't break him. But at the very least, I'd shatter his pride. The foolish woman who'd once adored him blindly was gone. If he could sneak around with men, then I'd fuck another right in front of him.
Hurt him. Humiliate him. That's what would make me feel alive.
Oliver's breathing turned ragged, his grip tightening as he pinned me against the wall, one hand shoving down his pants. His hardness pressed against me, insistent, desperate.
"Evelyn…" His voice was rough, strained. "You're the best woman I've ever known. But tell me—do you really want this? Or are you just… lonely?"
Even now, he was thinking clearly. My respect for him burned brighter.
I tangled my fingers in his hair, dragging his mouth back to mine. "No regrets," I whispered against his lips. "Just you. Just now. After this, we pretend it never happened."
He hesitated, his grip faltering—
And then my phone rang.
The shrill tone cut through the moment like a knife. Oliver immediately pulled back, urging me to answer in case it was important.
An unknown number flashed on the screen. I picked up—
"Evelyn, it's Ethan. Get to City General now. Daniel's been in an accident."
The phone slipped from my fingers.
I hated him. I hated him.
But the second those words hit me, it felt like the ground had vanished beneath my feet.
Oliver was already dressed, pulling me up, shoving my clothes into my hands. "What happened?"
"Daniel—car accident. Hospital."
His face paled. "Then what the hell are we still doing here? Move!"
Reality crashed back. I stumbled toward the door, my heart pounding for all the wrong reasons.
