Daniel Evans blinked his eyes open slowly. My fingers instinctively wrapped around his, but the way his gaze flickered away—like my touch burned—sent a sharp pain through my chest.
I swallowed the hurt and forced a smile. "You're awake! God, you scared me half to death."
But Daniel didn't look at me. Instead, his hoarse voice rasped toward Ethan Lopez. "I'm fine. You should go get some rest."
The moment Ethan left, the hospital room plunged into silence—thick, suffocating, the kind that presses down on your lungs.
I tried to fill it, stumbling through small talk, but Daniel's responses were clipped. Then, barely a minute later, he muttered, "I'm tired," and shut his eyes again.
My throat tightened as I stared at the bandages wrapped around his head. I wanted to scream. To cry. To shake him and demand answers. But how could I? Not when he was lying there, broken.
If only he'd come home that night—if he'd walked in and seen me with Oliver Langley—I could've unleashed everything. The fury, the accusations, the why the hell did you do this to us? But now? Now I had to choke it all down.
I couldn't stay in that room another second.
Pushing through the door, I sucked in a breath of cold hospital air—only to freeze.
Ethan was still there.
Slouched on a bench, scrolling mindlessly through his phone. He hadn't left at all.
Frowning, I dropped onto the seat beside him. "Ethan, why are you still here?"
He hesitated. "I… just want to make sure Daniel's okay. In case you need help."
Bullshit.
He'd just started at Daniel's company. The other coworkers had left hours ago. So why was he still here? Lingering. Watching. Even though I was the wife.
Unless…
I glanced down the empty hallway, then leaned in, voice low. "Ethan. Tell me the truth. What's going on between you and Daniel?"
His smile vanished. His shoulders tensed.
"Evelyn, I—what are you talking about?"
The way his eyes darted away told me everything. A cold laugh slipped out. "Don't play dumb. How far has this gone?"
The question hung between us, sharp as a blade.
Ethan ducked his head, fingers twisting together. His bangs shadowed his face, hiding whatever guilt or fear might've been there.
Finally, he muttered, "However far you think it has."
Not an answer. A deflection.
But it was enough.
My stomach dropped. All those weeks of suspicion, the back-and-forth of maybe I'm imagining things—gone. The truth was right in front of me.
Ethan shifted, uneasy under my stare. "Evelyn, forget I said anything. Daniel would kill me if he knew. Just… pretend this never happened."
A bitter laugh clawed its way up my throat. Of all the ways I'd imagined this going—the dramatic confrontations, the screaming matches, the other woman—I never saw this coming.
And the worst part?
I'd cheated first.
No justification changed that.
My phone buzzed—Nathan Roscente's name flashing on the screen. Ethan's gaze flicked to it. Heart pounding, I shot to my feet and rushed outside before he could see more.
