The pleasure was intoxicating—like a drug I couldn't get enough of.
The world blurred around us, narrowing to nothing but skin and heat and desperate need. I'd been exhausted before, but the second we moved together, energy crackled through me like lightning.
Now I understood what Sophia had always raved about. And now that I'd had a taste, I was ravenous. I wanted more. I wanted it all.
I'd never been this greedy. Never realized how badly I craved this kind of reckless, all-consuming bliss.
When footsteps passed nearby, we didn't stop. My moans spilled out, shameless and unapologetic. Shame? I tossed it aside without a care.
Nathan tried to pull away, but I dragged him back, nails biting into his skin. I wasn't ready to let go.
He wiped sweat from his brow, his voice rough. "Evelyn, you're goddamn addictive. I could do this with you every day—anywhere, any way..."
I wanted to say me too. But I couldn't.
Because I was still Daniel's wife. Whatever this was between Nathan and me, I had no name for it.
Before, I might have told myself I was trapped. Now? I was a willing participant. I didn't know if his words were just sweet nothings, but one thing was certain—I wasn't sure I could walk away from him now.
This happiness—I needed it. And suddenly, the urgency to divorce Daniel faded.
Divorce meant chaos. Endless questions from family, prying stares from coworkers, the mess of untangling a life.
Maybe this was simpler. He had his secrets. I had mine. What was so wrong with that?
Hand in hand, we lingered like teenagers, stealing one last kiss before parting. Only when his taillights vanished did I finally head back to the hospital, two cold takeout boxes in hand.
I nuked the food in the nurses' station microwave before slipping into Daniel's room.
At the door, I paused, smoothing my clothes and checking for any evidence of what I'd just done. Then I stepped inside.
Daniel and Ethan fell silent the second I entered, their conversation snapping shut like a book.
I smirked. "Did I interrupt something?"
Ethan stood quickly, taking the food with a polite smile. "Just work talk."
Daniel's gaze burned into me, weighted with something unreadable. "You took your time."
"The food court was packed. Took forever just to get a table."
I avoided his eyes, dropping into the chair by the window and pulling out my phone.
Ethan moved with an almost delicate grace, fussing over Daniel like a devoted spouse—wiping his mouth, adjusting his water before handing it to him.
Watching them, I felt like an outsider. Maybe I didn't even belong here.
The irony wasn't lost on me. The bitterness twisting in my chest was new, unsettling.
By midnight, Daniel finally convinced Ethan to leave.
I almost wished he'd stayed. Without him, the room plunged back into suffocating silence. Daniel shut his eyes, feigning sleep, while I sat rigid in my chair.
Then my phone buzzed.
A text from Nathan.
