My phone buzzed with a text that sent heat rushing to my cheeks: "I can't stop thinking about you—the way you taste, the way you feel against me. God, I miss you already. What am I supposed to do now?"
Just reading it made my pulse skip.
Out of the corner of my eye, Daniel shifted awake. I sucked in a slow breath, swiped the message away, and tossed my phone aside like it meant nothing.
His voice was rough with sleep. "Who was that?"
The lie came too easily. "Sophia."
His eyes narrowed. "Yeah? What'd she say?"
Irritation prickled under my skin. "Since when do I owe you a play-by-play of my texts? You don't see me grilling you about yours."
The air between us turned heavy.
Shit. He was hurt—I shouldn't have snapped. But the way he was pushing felt deliberate.
Then he dropped the bomb. "Let me use your phone. Need to make a call."
My stomach lurched. Fuck. Nathan's messages were still there.
If Daniel saw—
A sudden buzz cut through the tension. His phone, buried under his pillow, lit up. Relief flooded me as I grabbed it and shoved it into his hands.
But not before I caught the name on the screen: Ethan Lopez. And the message: "I'm worried sick about you. Because I love you."
Daniel yanked the phone away, his face flushing.
"You swore he was just joking around. Explain that."
I kept my voice steady. "There's nothing to explain. I've never lied to you. His feelings are his problem. To me, he's just a friend."
The self-righteous edge in his tone made my jaw clench.
But he was injured. Stuck in that bed. I swallowed the anger bubbling up. Things between us had been strained for weeks—I wanted honesty. But he kept shutting me out.
So I took a breath and asked softly, "Then tell me... how do you feel about him?"
He exploded. Fists slamming into the mattress, voice raw. "What, you want me to be gay? Is that it? Because I can't fuck you right now, you'd love an excuse to run off guilt-free, wouldn't you?"
I recoiled like he'd struck me.
That wasn't—Jesus, that wasn't what I meant. He was twisting it, deflecting.
The door flew open. A nurse glared at me. "He needs rest, not drama. Maybe you should step out and let someone else take over."
Daniel's glare burned into me, veins standing out at his temples.
