Daniel Evans' face twisted in disgust. "I don't want to talk right now. Just go home. We both need to cool off. And don't worry about me—I've got someone else to take care of me."
Someone else?
That had to mean Ethan Lopez. Those two weren't fooling anyone with their "just colleagues" act. The way they looked at each other? Please. And yet Daniel still had the nerve to deny it!
Love had turned him blind. Love had made him cruel to me.
Fine. If he wanted to play hardball, I could play dirtier. This was on him. Jaw clenched, I shot him one last glare before slamming the hospital door so hard the walls shook.
The second I walked through my front door, my phone buzzed. A text from Daniel: Don't come back before I'm discharged.
His words hit like a knife to the chest. My stomach dropped to the floor.
Ever since Ethan entered the picture, Daniel had become a completely different person—someone I didn't even recognize anymore. And I couldn't accept that.
Okay, yes, I'd cheated with Nathan Roscente. But only because I was trying to protect Daniel from the truth. He never asked. Never demanded answers. Did that really justify this silent punishment?
Then again... I had betrayed him first.
My thoughts twisted into impossible knots. I collapsed onto bed, where I spent hours staring at the ceiling, sleep refusing to come.
Next morning, I dragged myself to work with dark circles that could rival a raccoon's. Just as I entered the lobby, I nearly collided with Victoria Royston. She grabbed my arm, pulling me aside. "Tell me honestly," she whispered, "is Nathan seeing someone else?"
I almost laughed out loud. Nathan had played this perfectly. His wedding to Isabella Winston was practically tomorrow, and Victoria still had no clue.
Speak of the devil—Nathan himself appeared at the entrance. His face darkened instantly when he saw us together.
I hadn't said a word, but my skin prickled with guilt anyway. I gave him a stiff nod before making some excuse to Victoria and practically sprinting to the elevator.
Behind me, raised voices erupted. Thank God the elevator doors closed just in time to cut off their argument.
Not thirty minutes later, Nathan's secretary summoned me to his office.
I knew exactly why. This was about Victoria.
The moment I stepped inside, Nathan launched out of his chair, jabbing a finger at me. "What the hell did you tell her?"
I blinked. "Nothing."
Which was the truth. I hadn't breathed a word. Even if I had, I'd have played dumb. His anger made zero sense.
I met his glare without flinching, keeping my face the picture of innocence.
Nathan lit a cigarette, pacing to the window like a tiger in a cage. "She's getting suspicious. I have to explain my every move now. It's fucking suffocating."
The question slipped out before I could stop it: "Then why not just break up?"
He turned slowly, blowing smoke rings, his eyes narrowing to slits. "Break up? She'd murder me."
So the mighty Nathan Roscente had a weakness after all. And I'd been right—there was something seriously dangerous about Victoria.
"But you're marrying Isabella," I pressed. "How long can you keep that under wraps? If Victoria finds out—"
