Daniel Evans shot me a frosty smirk. "Why the hell would Ethan Lopez take care of me? What's he to me?"
The question hit me like a slap. I opened my mouth but no words came out.
Technically, I was his wife. When your husband's injured, you step up. But Ethan? I had no damn clue what that relationship really was.
My silence seemed to soften him. "Ethan called this morning," he said, voice quieter now. "His girlfriend's pregnant. They're getting married."
My jaw actually dropped.
Wait—what?
This was the same Ethan who'd confessed feelings for Daniel. The one whose cozy moments with my husband had been captured in those incriminating photos Nathan sent me. How the hell did this add up?
Daniel exhaled heavily. "I get why you're shocked. Truth is, Ethan's bi—attracted to both men and women. He had... feelings for me that I never noticed. To me, he was just like a kid brother." He rubbed his temple. "He was torn between us, but ultimately chose her."
I searched Daniel's face desperately, trying to read between the lines.
My world had become such a goddamn mess lately that I couldn't tell truth from lies anymore.
"But you and Ethan," I pressed, my throat tight. "Swear to me there was never anything more. No... physical lines crossed?"
The question tasted bitter, but I had to ask.
For the first time in forever, he was actually talking. I owed us both this moment.
Daniel held my gaze, steady and clear. "Never."
That one word hit me like a sledgehammer. The room spun and I swayed, barely catching myself on the bedpost.
I must've looked like death because Daniel reached for me, genuine worry in his eyes. After twelve years together, I knew he wouldn't lie to me. And yet—part of me wished he had.
Because these past weeks with Nathan... Christ, I'd fallen harder than I ever imagined. It started with his blackmail—that damn video he used to force me into his bed.
But then everything went sideways.
What began as reluctant suffering turned to numb acceptance, then morphed into some twisted revenge fantasy when I convinced myself Daniel was gay. I'd thrown myself at Nathan like some pathetic scorned wife.
If Daniel was telling the truth, his ED didn't excuse my cheating. I'd fucked up—royally.
My legs gave out and I collapsed into the bedside chair, hollowed out like a shell.
"Evelyn," Daniel said softly, "I know you're seeing someone. I don't care who it is." His voice cracked. "I can't... be what you need. If you want out... I'll let you go."
Let me go?
He meant divorce.
Tears burned my eyes as I looked up at him.
All this time I'd thought he was the one who changed. But the truth stared back at me in the hospital room's harsh light—it was me.
He still seemed like the man I'd married. But the woman staring back in the mirror? I didn't know her anymore.
I'd always prided myself on not believing everything I saw. Yet I'd trusted Nathan's lies over my own husband.
What the hell was wrong with me?
Had I completely lost my damn mind?
