I thrashed against his grip. "What the hell? Let me go!"
Nathan Roscente's smirk sent chills through me, his breath hot and uneven against my ear. "I've waited too damn long for this. Just stop fighting me."
His words made my blood run cold. "Nathan, I'm pregnant! This could kill me! If I hemorrhage—"
"I'll be careful," he growled, cutting me off as his mouth crashed onto mine. His tongue forced its way in while his hands burned trails across my skin, igniting sensations I'd tried so hard to forget.
God help me, my body remembered him too well. That familiar heat began pooling low in my stomach despite my terror.
No. Not with the baby. Not until I'd made my decision.
I twisted violently, but he only tightened his hold—until pounding at the door shattered the moment.
"Nathan! Open this door right now!" Victoria Royston's voice sliced through the room like a blade.
He went rigid. I lunged for the door, but his fingers bit into my wrist. "Are you insane? Get out of sight!"
His brutal yank sent me sprawling. My ankle gave way with a sickening twist as I hit the floor—then white-hot pain tore through my abdomen. Warmth gushed between my thighs, staining my dress crimson.
The scream that tore from my throat brought Nathan running. He took one look at the blood and paled. "Upstairs! Now!" he hissed, dragging me toward the staircase as red smears marked our path.
"Call an ambulance!" I sobbed, nails digging into his arm as another wave of agony hit. "I'm dying—"
The door exploded inward. Victoria and three hulking bodyguards filled the doorway just as darkness swallowed me whole.
Beeping machines greeted me when I surfaced. Hospital. Memories flickered—Nathan's panic, the blood, Victoria's arrival.
The door clicked open. Victoria herself stood at my bedside, lips pursed.
"So you're Evelyn. Nathan's little secret." Her laugh held no humor. "Funny—he didn't seem too concerned whether you lived or bled out on his floor."
When I didn't answer, she leaned in. "Why'd you stay with him?"
Since she'd saved my life—and since I now hated Nathan more than I'd ever loved him—I told her everything. The coercion. The lies. His engagement to Isabella Winston.
Victoria's manicured fingers clenched. "That bastard told me you threw yourself at him." A sharp exhale. "Consider your debt to him canceled. If he's blackmailing you, I'll make sure he never bothers you again."
For the first time in years, I breathed freely.
