I wasn't close to her, but I trusted her completely.
The determination in her eyes told me she wouldn't let me down.
The next few days dragged by with no sign of Victoria Royston. Alone in my hospital bed, I forced cheerfulness into my voice when Daniel Evans called, assuring him I was fine at home and not to worry. But guilt twisted inside me. He treated me with nothing but kindness, and yet I'd been with a man like Nathan Roscente…
If I had my way, he'd never find out.
Then Sophia Hill called with news that sent a rush of vindication through me. On Nathan and Isabella Winston's wedding day, Isabella had made a scene—so explosive that the ceremony collapsed into chaos. Her parents dragged her home, and her father pulled a major investment from Nathan, stripping him of his position at the company.
It was the best thing I'd heard in months. Tears spilled over—not from sorrow, but from sheer, overwhelming relief.
Isabella finally visited me. She told me she'd forced Nathan to delete the incriminating video of me from his phone and even ransacked his home to wipe every backup from his computer.
I clutched her hand like a lifeline, unable to let go. I never expected her to do something like this—to help me in such a monumental way. Sobbing like a child, I choked out my gratitude over and over.
"Do you know where Nathan is now?" she asked.
I blinked. "What?"
"Arrested for illegal fundraising." A cold smirk curled her lips. "Karma's a bitch, isn't it? Rotting in jail is worse than death—more satisfying than if I'd killed him myself."
After a short visit, she left. I watched her go, tears streaming down my face like scattered pearls.
Looking back, I could've fought back sooner. When Nathan first blackmailed me with that video, I could've negotiated. I could've found leverage against him. But back then, part of me was still caught in the thrill—half-resisting, half-yielding. Sometimes, I even welcomed the video's existence. It gave me an excuse to indulge.
Later, when I learned about Victoria, I could've used it against him. But I never even considered it.
I envied Sophia. I envied any woman with a stable, loving marriage. Slowly, that envy curdled into something darker. I became reckless, wild, chasing desire over everything else.
Lost in regret, I didn't notice Daniel standing beside me until it was too late.
For a second, I thought I was imagining him. Stunned, I whispered, "You—"
"I've been outside the whole time," he said quietly. "I heard everything. I never imagined—"
He heard everything?
My stomach dropped. My mind went blank. There was no way he'd forgive me—not now. I was tainted, carrying another man's child. Divorce was inevitable.
The thought crushed my chest like a vise, pain radiating through me.
"Daniel, I don't deserve your forgiveness," I whispered. "But I owe you an apology. Whatever you decide… I'll respect it. Maybe… we were never meant to be."
