Daniel Evans exhaled deeply, the weight of years pressing down on his shoulders. "You've always wondered why the meds never worked for my... problem. I couldn't bring myself to tell you because it goes back to when I was a kid." His jaw tightened. "My parents were always working, so they hired a nanny. She... she molested me."
The words came out like shards of glass, his face twisting with remembered pain.
"She threatened me into silence. As I got older, it got worse. She forced me to... to be with her." His voice cracked. "Every night was another nightmare. I felt trapped in hell. When my mom took early retirement after her work injury, they finally fired the nanny. But the damage..." He shook his head. "I tried to bury it all."
My heart shattered. All this time, I'd never imagined Daniel's condition stemmed from something so horrific. The man I loved had been carrying this alone for decades.
"Daniel," I whispered, reaching for him, "we're partners. You should've told me. We could've gotten you help—therapy, counseling. Now that we know, we can start healing—"
The word "we" died on my lips as guilt crashed over me. Did I even have the right to say that anymore?
"Maybe therapy would help," he said quietly. Then, with heartbreaking directness: "Now tell me about you and Nathan. The truth."
My cheeks burned as I stared at my hands. This was the reckoning I'd feared.
"It began because of a video. That day on the subway..." My voice sounded distant, like I was narrating someone else's life. I held nothing back—no excuses, no pretty lies. The raw truth was all I had left.
Daniel listened without reaction, his face an unreadable mask.
With every confession, my shoulders slumped further. By the end, hot tears streaked my face.
If only regret came in pill form. If only we could turn back time.
Daniel pulled me into a brief, tight embrace. "I need space to process all this. To figure out... what comes next."
I nodded against his chest, my vision blurred with tears.
A week later, Daniel transferred to the company's southern branch without discussion. I couldn't blame him—what man could just move past this?
We both needed time.
At the train station, he crushed me in one last desperate hug. "I'm sorry too," he whispered. "When I come back... maybe we'll both be healed enough to start fresh."
I watched him board, tears flowing freely as the train carried him away.
