I opened my mouth to speak but no words came out while I stared at Sara who looked pale while eyeing the gun and the mess I made when I patched Violet on the table. She stood still while her eyes flickered to my direction and like I was, no words came out when she opened her mouth.
I slowly walked to her, still her gaze was trained on me as I moved.
"S-Sara, I can explain," I said in a slow and calm voice. I flinched when her hand suddenly gripped my arm. She looked really pale now that I was standing near her. Could it be that she has a fear of blood?
"Sam, b-blood," With that, her eyes rolled back and she collapsed into my arms. I staggered back at the sudden weight and looked at Violet who stayed silent since. She smiled and shrugged, leaning back on the couch.
I frowned, "What are you smiling about? Can't you see she just fainted. Come on help me."
"Could it be she has hemophobia? Well anyway, I guess it's a good thing she fainted, we got time to think of an excuse to what she saw...and in case you forgot, I'm wounded so I can't help you," she replied nonchalantly.
"Unbelievable," I murmured. Sighing in defeat, I lifted Sara and carried her on my arms as I climbed upstairs and headed to my bedroom. Opening the door, I walked inside and gently laid her down on the bed. I took her glasses and put it to the bedside table before staring back at her sleeping face. She looked so peaceful and innocent that I didn't want to stop looking at her. Brushing a strand of hair from her face, I thought of what Violet had said. I had to think of plausible excuse and knowing how smart and curious Sara was, it would be hard to make her believe.
I heaved myself up and stripped the dress off before walking to the bathroom. After last night's event, I definitely wanted to take a shower, aside from sleep, as I felt icky. As soon as the water hit my skin, all my nerves had calmed down and I felt rejuvenated yet my mind hadn't stopped thinking about everything. I now knew that the Red Circle was after the Cox' but the big question was why? Why would a notorious organization we had been chasing for years had been targeting them? Thinking about it, I wanted to go to the house and asked Mr. Cox but now wasn't the perfect time as it was too risky, enemies could be lurking everywhere considering we just had our mission.
Another thing that has been bugging me was Olivia. I wondered how she was doing. Was she still afraid of me? Or was she mad at me because I left her all of a sudden? Even if I wanted to see her, I had to wait and besides, I knew she wanted to have some private time with her parents. And of course, this thing with Sara, why was she here anyway?
Wrapping the towel around my body, I went out of the bathroom and saw Sara slowly waking up. I watched her curiously as she slowly sat up and put on her glasses, looking around the room until her gaze landed on mine.
"Oh, um, h-how did I get here?" she stammered as I noticed her eyes sized me up. Her cheeks turned red and she looked away.
"I carried you here, you fainted. Do you perhaps have a fear in blood?"
She nodded. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to cause you any trouble."
"But you saw my bleeding lip that movie night yet you seemed okay."
She hung her head, her forehead creased as if she was thinking. "Oh that, I was distracted and Olivia wiped it before I could make a good look at it."
I nodded slowly, "Anyway. I'm glad you're okay."
She looked up and stared at me, "So what happened to Violet? Why is there a gun on the table? Is it yours? or hers? And why were you two in those dresses? Did you go to a party? Is that the reason why the two of you weren't in school yesterday?"
I remained silent for a moment and just stared back at her. From the questions she threw at me, I didn't know what to answer first. But leaving those aside, there was absolutely no way I would tell her that truth as it would put her in more danger. Then again if I told her, it might changed how she looked at me and maybe she would distance herself from me just like what Olivia was doing, which was a good thing to keep her safe. But was I ready to lose her just like I was slowly losing Liv? But then again, I had no idea how she would react if I told her the truth.
Letting out a deep breath, I walked to my closet, grabbing a loose white tee, denim shorts and undergarments before walking back to the bathroom to change. Sara must be wondering but I couldn't answer her right now. I had to talk to Violet first.
After changing, I went back to the bedroom and found Sara sitting at the edge of the bed with her arms crossed on her chest. She looked at me impatiently but I just smiled before grabbing the hair dyer and started drying my hair.
"Well, are you planning to answer me?"
I rolled my eyes, "If I was planning to answer you Sara, I would have answered you already."
She scoffed, "Why can't you tell me?... Are you a criminal or something?" I stopped at what I was doing and turned to her.
"What if I am? Shouldn't you feel scared?" She looked taken aback and averted her gaze. She gripped the mattress tight turning her knuckles white. "I thought so," I mumbled before turning my back to her and continued drying my hair. As I looked at her through the mirror, she was still looking down and unmoved.
"You know what?..." I raised my eyebrow when she spoke up. She looked back up at me through the mirror with a serious expression. "...So what if you're a criminal... That doesn't change how I feel about you..." I froze at what she said and squinted back at her. She must be kidding right now. There was no way she meant it.
"I'm sure you don't mean that."
She shook her head, "I do. Criminal or not, nothing would change about my feelings for you. And say..." she stood up and walked behind me, brushing my hair to the side "...if you're really a criminal, I wouldn't feel scared because you're the one who makes me feel safe and secured." The hairs on the back of my neck stood up as I could feel her warm breath on my back. What was she doing to me?
I stepped aside and cleared my throat, "Well, I can assure you I'm not a criminal... and the gun, it was to protect myself, you know how these days, we might as well be prepared, you'll never know... and speaking of Violet, it was nothing, she just bumped into something sharp. Thankfully it wasn't deep or else...I don't wanna think about it," I rambled keeping myself composed as I suddenly felt uncomfortable.
"Oh...okay. Um, thank God it wasn't that serious."
"Psshh, yeah." I said, shrugging and continued what I was doing. I glanced at her on my side and I could still see a frown on her expression. Why was I all worked up again?
"Now that I think about it, why's the gun out in the open? Shouldn't you be keeping it?"
"I-I did keep it. I was cleaning it?"
She looked at me suspiciously, "Really?" I nodded eagerly and smiled briefly. Gosh, I didn't know how long I would keep up with her as she didn't seem to run out of questions. It was like she was more curious than a detective right now.
Combing my hair with my fingers, I turned off the dryer and walked straight to the bed to get some sleep. I flopped down on the soft mattress and stretched out while yawning.
"Ugh, I'm freaking exhausted. By the way, why are you here exactly?" I asked weakly. She smiled and flopped down beside me.
"I wanna spend my Saturday with you. I missed you yesterday and you didn't call or text me to let me know you were gonna be absent. I wished you were in school yesterday. Did you know how lonely I was, eating my lunch alone since Elle was absent too. And speaking of that girl, I have't seen her for days..." As Sara continued talking, her voice had became distant and muffled as I found myself slowly slipping into unconsciousness. I knew it was rude to fall asleep when someone's taking to you but right now, all I cared about was to get some sleep and with that, I let sleep took over my senses.
*
I crunched up my nose as I felt something kept poking it. Fluttering my eyes open, I saw Sara's smiling face greeted me. Our faces were inches apart and as I became aware of my position, I quickly pulled my arm from her waist but her hand immediately held it, putting it back to where it was.
Narrowing my eyes, I spoke, "What are you doing?"
"Nothing. I just like where your hand is right now."
I smiled, "Fine. I'll let you have this moment. What time is it now?"
She lifted her arm on my waist and looked at her watch, "It's almost 4 pm."
"Oh I have to check on Violet." I hastily got up but before I could get off the bed I was suddenly pulled back and I ended up on top of Sara. She giggled while I stared at her incredulously. She could be unpredictable sometimes.
"What are you trying to pull here Sara?"
"Oh nothing. I just like seeing you on top of me," she answered seductively, biting her lower lip. Judging by her expression, I knew fully well she was teasing me and frankly it surprised me how she could do something like this. And if that was what she wanted then I could play her game.
Smirking, I gently took her glasses off, putting it to the side then slowly leaned in and brushed my lips to hers briefly. As soon as our lips met, a familiar sensation cursed through me, it was the same feeling I felt when we first kissed. I ignored it, remembering I was doing this to tease her.
I nibbled her lower lip, causing her to moan lightly and as I slowly trailed my kisses down to her neck, I heard her breath hitched, that was when I knew I found her soft spot. As I further teased her, I noticed her gripped on my hips tightened when I moved up to nibble her earlobe, letting out another moan.
"Oh God, Samantha," she murmured almost causing me to chuckle. Seeing her reaction, I suddenly felt bad doing this to her. I pulled myself back and just stared her down. Realizing what I did, she opened her eyes and frowned momentarily, and when it hit her, her eyes opened wide.
"You idiot!," she shrieked and slapped me in the arm. I burst in laughter and fell beside her, holding my stomach. "I can't believe I fell for that." She covered her face with her hands as if embarrassed.
"That's what you get for teasing me," I replied while wiping the side of my eyes.
"How'd you even know? Ugh, this is so embarrassing."
I got off the bed, chuckling as I looked at her now covering her face with a pillow. "Look, I'm sorry, I feel bad about it but honestly...your moans turned me on." I said jokingly.
"Oh shut up!" she yelled then threw the pillow on my direction which I easily avoided. She dragged herself off the bed and even if she was looking down, I knew was still blushing.
"Come on now." I said opening the door and went downstairs as she followed me behind.
*
"Did you see how Violet stared at me? It was like she was scrutinizing me." Sara was rambling for almost thirty minutes now and normally, I would be annoyed but surprisingly, I didn't feel something like that. We were currently on the car, heading to a grocery store to buy ingredients for dinner later.
"Yeah, well, it's not often she'd seen you blush that hard."
"Yeah, all thanks to you," she retorted making me chuckle.
"And I felt bad for it. I went too far."
She rolled her eyes, "Whatever. It's not that I didn't like it though," she mumbled under her breath.
I glanced at her curiously, "What?"
She sighed, "Although it's embarrassing, I kind of liked it." Oh, I didn't expect her to say that.
"Kind of?"
"Uh yeah? What? You're expecting something more?"
Shaking my head, smiling, I pulled up on the parking lot and we both got out of the car. As soon as we were inside the small store, we immediately roamed to sections and picked out the ingredients we needed. After, for what felt like thirty minutes, we fell in line and waited patienly to pay. Luckily, it didn't take long for us to wait in line.
"Here's your change. Come again." The woman, probably in her early thirties, smiled warmly at me as she handed me the change.
"Thanks." I replied with a smile. Nodding to Sara, we stepped out carrying the bag of groceries. As we were by the entrance, I thought of something I forgot to buy.
"Shoot, I forgot to buy something. I'll be quick,"
"Okay, I'll wait for you. You can leave the bags here." I nodded and went back in, heading straight to the liquor section. Looking at the various bottles in front of me, I thought for a moment what wine would go with our dish tonight. After some thinking, I grabbed the one I liked best and proceeded to the cashier.
Smiling at the cashier, I thanked her one last time and exited the store. As the door closed, I noticed our bags of groceries were left on the floor. My smile vanished as my heartbeats picked up when I didn't see Sara anywhere. Different scenarios played in my head while I looked around for Sara. Could she have gone back inside? No, that wouldn't be the case or else she would have carried the bags. As I rounded the store, I ended up in a back alley where I immediately saw Sara. She was backed up on the wall, hugging an unknown woman on her side as two thugs advancing in on them.
Without wasting any time, I ran up to them and kicked the hand of the guy holding a knife that was about to stab Sara. The knife flew from his grasp and before he could recovered, I brought a kick to his gut then up to his nose causing him to stagger back and yelp in pain. The other guy pulled up a knife as well and charged, slashing the knife in the air.
"Oh God Samantha!," Sara yelled behind me. I easily dodge his lousy attacks and when I got hold of his arm, I twisted it to his back, causing him to whimper in pain, releasing the knife from his grip. I kicked him on his back and he stumbled forward.
"Get out of here before I call the cops," I snapped and they instantly scurried away.
"Help!" I turned to Sara's direction and found her leaning to the woman. I quickly ran to her side and hauled her up by her shoulders. "What's happening to her?" the woman asked worriedly. Sara must have seen the blood on that thug I kicked on the face. I noticed she was still conscious.
"Sara, hey, I'm here. Breathe, come on, breathe, don't faint on me now." She groaned, her eyes were fluttering. "Come on, take a deep breath. Ugh, damn it!" I hissed before smashing my lips to her. I didn't know if the kiss would work as I didn't really know what to do. Good thing, she didn't faint all the way.
Seconds after, I felt her slowly kissing me back, making me smile in relief. I pulled away and saw her face returning to its color then her eyes slowly opened.
"Oh, wow," she murmured while fixing her gaze at me.
I chuckled, "Thank God I don't have to carry you, for the second time around."
"Thanks for doing that." I smiled. I heard someone cleared their throat and I turned to the woman. Now that I looked closer, she was probably in her late thirties and judging by her appearance, she looked well-off.
The woman beamed at us, making her dimples appeared, "Thank you both for saving me. I owe you my life."
"It was nothing ma'am." I answered politely.
"Tell me how can I repay you both?"
"Oh no, you don't have to ma'am. We're just glad we were able to help," Sara said.
I cleared my throat, "Um, I think we should get out of here." They nodded and together, we walked back to the front. Thankfully, a store staff saw me took off and decided to keep our groceries and handed it to us. After we bid goodbyes with the woman, named Nora, we headed to the car in silence.
"What the hell was that?" I queried after getting in the driver's seat.
"What the hell was what?"
"Saving that woman, that's what! Sara you almost got stabbed... and if I hadn't gotten there on time, you could have been hurt or worse," I snapped. I didn't know where this anger came from but when I recalled what happened back there, I felt pissed and I didn't know why.
"But I'm fine... I couldn't just stand and watch while that lady was being robbed by those two. I'm sorry if I acted out without thinking but I didn't regret it."
I sighed in defeat and shook my head, "Okay. Just... I don't know, try to stay out of trouble?" She nodded and smiled. A moment of silence hung between us but when Sara thought of something, she looked at me questioningly.
"What?"
"How'd you do that? Where did you learn to fight?"
"Um, someone taught me.
"Huh! You're like a cool agent now. You have a gun and you know how to fight, that's just...wow. Makes me like you more."
I chuckled, "Silly."
*
Three days after our mission, everything was still normal and it seemed like the enemies hadn't found us yet. As I desperately wanted to know some information, I decided I would pay the Coxs a visit. After cleaning Violet's wound and checking the house's security system, I went upstairs and changed.
"V, take care of Oreo for me and don't let him get out of the house. I don't want him to be missing again."
"Aye, aye captain," Violet answered without even looking at me. She has been facing her iPad for a while now and it made me curious but that would be later.
Putting on my helmet, I zipped up my leather jacket and started the engine then maneuvered out of the driveway. It would be a long ride, but I tried to ignore it so long as I could get some answers when I get to the house.
After a two-hour ride, I finally reached the house. I parked my bike at the usual spot and got off. Everything was looking good out here, bodyguards were still surrounding the house. I strode to the house but stopped midway when a guard raised his hand then gestured to the nearest guy to search me. I raised my arms so he could search me.
"Apologies Ms. Smith. Protocol."
"No problem. But I do like to keep my gun if you wouldn't mind,"
"I'm sorry but-..."
"Ah Ms. Smith!" Mr. Cox loud voice caused me to look at him as he was standing on the porch, holding a cup. The guard searching me stepped aside and I continued my way until I reached the porch.
"Good afternoon Mr. Cox."
"Oh please not so formal. Call me Felix. Come on let's go inside." I nodded and followed him. I sat on the familiar couch while Felix took a seat on the couch opposite me. "So, any developments?"
I nodded and looked at him seriously. "We found out who was targeting your family." His face turned to into a blank expression before putting the cup on the table.
"Who?"
"The Red Cir-..."
"Dad, is that...Scarlett?" Olivia trailed off as she descended the stairs, looking at me. Seeing her again after a couple of days lightened up my mood. I trained my gaze on her until she reached to her father's side and slowly sat down. Neither of us broke eye contact, just staring at those deep blue eyes caused my mind to blank. Now I didn't want to lose sight of those blue orbs as I was getting absorbed by them. I didn't realize how I missed looking at her until now, seeing her, sitting opposite me.
"Okay, Scarlett?"
I had no idea what she was thinking right now, that we saw each other as she getting good at making blank expressions. I wondered if she still was afraid of me, or angry perhaps?
"Scarlett!"
I snapped out of my reverie and looked at Felix, "I, um, I'm sorry. So, um...the Red Circle organization is targeting you Felix."
His forehead creased as if he was thinking and then seconds later, his face lightened up, "You mean that drug-dealing organization you have been chasing for years?"
I nodded.
"Wait, dad, how'd you know they'd been chasing that organization?" Olivia butted in, glancing at my direction.
"Well, the truth is I-..." Felix statement was cut when a bodyguard stepped in.
"Mr. Cox, we found an intruder," said the bodyguard in an urgent tone. I glanced at Felix and Olivia before getting out to the porch. I saw two guards hauling someone and when I focused my gaze, I instantly recognized the person.
Shit!
"You brought her here?" Olivia asked in an accusing tone.
"I didn't."
"She rolled her eyes, "So much for being discreet."
I ignored her remark and strode to the intruder's direction. I couldn't believe she followed me here and worse, I didn't notice I was being followed.
"No, let her go. I know her." I hollered. The two bodyguards let her go and she immediately ran to me. "What are you doing her Sara? Did you follow me?"
She nodded eagerly. She was breathing hard, I could tell she was scared, "What's going on Samantha? Who are they?"
"You're not supposed to be here."
"Well, hello there!" I rolled my eyes at Olivia's unusual greeting. Sara looked surprised when she saw Olivia, her eyes flickered from me to Olivia.
"Olivia! Why are you here?"
Olivia clicked her tongue, "I should be the one asking you that," she said nonchalantly.
"Samantha, what is going on? Please tell me. Who are you?" I bit my lip and looked at Olivia who just shrugged. If I would tell Sara everything, she would be in deep mess, putting her life more in danger and considering what she saw, I doubted she would believe me if I made up stories and excuses.
I took a deep breath, and looked at her deep into her eyes, "If I tell you everything, promise me you won't tell anyone."
She nodded, "I promise."
"Okay, first off...my name isn't Samantha Flynn."
"W-What?"
"My real name is Scarlett Smith and I'm an agent."

I slowly walked to her, still her gaze was trained on me as I moved.
