I woke up with an intense pain on my back and slowly lifted myself to sit up. My mind was clouded, I was disoriented at first, even I couldn't remember the events last night, how I ended up here in my bedroom in the white house, until few seconds later, the memory came crashing down on me. I remembered we were attacked by the Red Circle, Liv was taken by them and I ended up getting shot.
I groaned when I was reminded by the stabbing pain of my bullet wound. As I thought of last night, seeing a gun was pointed at Violet nearly stopped my heart, and between Liv and her, I knew I had to save her first. I may be angy at her but I couldn't stand if something would happen to her. I still cared about her even if she lied to me big time.
My mind drifted to Liv and how she looked so frightened as the lackeys forced her inside the van. I could vividly recall how I saw her gazed at me as if asking me for help and it pained me how I just let her go like that. That was why as of this moment, bringing her back would be my top priority and I wouldn't waste any minute as it would expose her to even more danger. I knew The Mother wouldn't kill her because she would use Liv to get to her parents. All I was worried about was that she would probably hurt Liv to get information about their whereabouts.
It would be a matter of time before the Red Circle could get their hands on the Coxs.
Slowly getting off the bed, I treaded carefully to the door, not to strain too much to avoid more pain. Halfway through, the door suddenly opened, causing me to stop moving. Violet stood on the doorway, glaring daggers at me while she crossed her arms. I had no idea what she was mad about but I didn't want to deal whatever it was as I didn't want to argue first thing I woke up.
I sighed defeatedly, "Look V, I don't wan to ar-..." She didn't let me finish my sentence when she unexpectedly engulfed me in a hug making me bit my lower lip to keep the pain within and reluctantly put an arm on her back.
"Don't ever do that again Scar babe," she mumbled as she started to sob. My forehead creased in confusion, trying to think what she was talking about. "Don't ever take a bullet for me again," she added.
I let out a breath, "I had to. You could have died if that bullet hit you V."
She pulled away and stared at me with her tear-stained face. "So could you Scarlett. Do you have any idea how worried we were? You shouldn't have done that. You hate me remember?"
"I may be angry but I don't hate you V. Sure you hurt me for lying but that doesn't mean I have to let you die."
She breathed, "God you're...impossible."
I smirked although I didn't know in what way I was being impossible. "Okay, let's get moving. We have to find Liv," I said as I walked past her but she held my wrist making me turn to her.
"I found Liv, she's in a hotel..." I was about to ask her how she managed to locate her but she beat me to it, "...Remember the necklace you gave her?"
Oh, right!
"But why in a hotel?" I queried as I knew Violet knew The Mother. She arched her brows momentarily.
"Let's just say she likes to be classy."
"Well then let's not waste time." I promptly turned my back to her and walked out of the room.
"You can't be serious. You should be resting," she called from behind and then I heard a huge sigh as I slowly descended the stairs. She caught up beside me in silence which I was grateful for until we reached the base of the stairs. As I looked to the living room, I immediately spotted Sara peacefully sleeping on the couch.
"How is she?" I mumbled as I tilted my head to the couch.
"She fainted when she saw your blood in the parking lot and came around on the way here. She was worried sick about you Scar and stayed all night looking after you. She just got her good night sleep." As my heart constricted for causing her such worry, I walked to her direction and stared at her sleeping face. My gaze drifted to the cup of coffee on the center table. She must have fallen asleep while drinking her coffee.
Oh Sara.
Pushing the cup to the side, I sat down on the edge of the table and stared intently at her again. She looked so peaceful everytime she slept and I couldn't stop looking at her. What did I do to deserve her? She was the most wonderful person I had ever met, so lovely and innocent, and yet I blamed myself for getting her involved in everything. I tried pushing her away but she kept coming back and now I had no idea how to make her go away before she would get hurt.
I brushed the stray strand of hair behind her ear before standing up and turned to Violet who was spacing out.
"We have to go V," I said snapping her out of trance. She shifted her gaze from Sara and looked at me uncertainly.
"What?"
"I said we have to go save Olivia."
She shook her head immediately, "No, I can't let you come with me Liv, you're hurt."
"But I can't let you go alone."
"Who said I would be alone? Besides I'm gonna do a stake-out first so we come up a plan of action."
I sighed, "But-.."
"No buts Scar. You're gonna stay here and rest, that's final!" If I was in a perfect health, I would have argued with her but this time, I simply nodded and relented. As much as I wanted to save Liv, I didn't think I could do anything, even a stake-out, in this state.
"Just be careful. I don't want you getting hurt after I just saved you," I reminded jokingly making her smirk.
"Oh I shall return perfectly healthy. You can count me on that. I'll see you later Scar babe." With a smile, she went out of her way and watched her receding figure. When V got into my bike and sped off, I headed to the kitchen to look for something edible. I wished I wasn't in a weak state right now, I could have done simple things effortlessly but now it felt like a strenuous work to me as I looked for something to eat.
I found some biscuits and made my way to the living room. I slowly sat on the couch across Sara and watched her as I ate my biscuits. If Violet had left her iPad here, I would have looked at Liv's whereabouts, to keep me busy even if my body refused to. I may looked like I was relaxing but deep down I was worried for Liv, for Violet, even for Sara. I didn't think anywhere was safe as long as the Red Circle was around, not even here in the white house. The enemies could attack us any moment and I didn't think I could protect Sara with my current state. I just hoped the Red Circle wouldn't think of attacking here right now.
I finished my biscuit in no time and headed back upstairs to get the book I started reading. As soon as I found it, I went back downstairs and sat on the couch. I started reading and felt the anxiousness slowly ebbed away as I got engulfed into it. Reading was one way to keep my emotions in check and I was glad that it worked as I felt like I was about to break in worrying.
Nearly an hour later, my eyelids started to get heavy so I closed the book and closed my eyes as I carefully rested my back to the backrest and turned slightly to my side to avoid hitting my wound. It didn't take long for me to feel my control has slowly left my body until minutes later I was totally engulfed in another sleep.
*
The sudden break of a glass caused me to jolt awake in alarm. I immediately saw Sara on the floor picking up the shards of the broken cup and noticed her trembling hands.
"Sara?" I asked in concern. She looked up to the sound of my voice and her eyes instantly lighted up.
"Scarlett!" she called before standing up and moved to my side, enveloping me in a tight hug. I winced at the sudden contact and gritted my teeth to keep me from hissing in pain. Like Violet earlier, I could tell she was crying when I heard her sniffling.
"Hey what's wrong?" I queried, rubbing her back at the same time. She pulled away and looked at me.
"I'm glad you're okay," she answered.
I smiled as I brought my hand to cup her cheek, "Of course I'm okay. I'm tough, a single bullet won't kill me."
She sniffled, "I was so worried, seeing you covered with blood, I...I thought...God it was horrible!"
"Shhh, it's okay," I cooed as I pulled her into a hug. She continued crying and I let her be knowing she was keeping it in for a while now. Oh God, I felt terrible for worrying her.
After few minutes, she finally stopped crying, pulling herself from my hug and looked at me once again.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to wake you. The cup just slipped from my grasp," she said, glancing at the shards on the floor.
"I'm glad you didn't get hurt. What happened?"I inquired looking at her hands which were trembling few minutes ago.
She looked away briefly then gazed back at me, "I was worried sick. When I woke up, I couldn't find Violet and I couldn't just wake you up to ask you so I tried keeping it together by busying myself in watching over you but I..." she trailed off and heaved a huge sigh.
"You know you don't have to do that. You should have woken me up,"
She shook her head, "I can't, you're hurt so you should be resting."
I sighed and stared at her for a moment. "How many cups?"
She bit her lower lip before she reluctantly answered, "Four."
"You know what, I want you to rest, I know you've been watching me the whole night and I couldn't thank you enough for that."
"No it's fine. You should be the one resting Scarlett, I'm not the one with a bullet wound here."
I chuckled, "No Sara. I insist you get some rest and that's final."
"You know what, why not we just stop telling each other to rest because clearly we don't want to. Besides, it's almost 5 pm, I'll make dinner later."
"Fine," I relented causing her to smile, "Okay I have to get up first, my butt's killing me from sitting too long." She chuckled and helped me get up. I was glad I managed to ease her anxiety even just for a little.
"I'm gonna go upstairs to return this book," I spoke, slowly bending down to get the book on the floor but before I could she had managed to pick it up first and handed it to me. I smiled gratefully and took the book before walking past her.
"Scarlett?" she called from behind.
"Hm?" I turned around and before I knew it, her hands suddenly cupped my cheeks and then brought her lips to mine. My eyes shot wide in surprised but when I registered her lips was on mine, I let myself drown to the familiar feeling I felt when she first kissed me. As I was absorbed into our sweet and passionate kiss, I forgot about the pain on my back and the heaviness of my body. It was as if the only thing I needed at the moment.
"Scar we have a...problem..."  We immediately pulled apart and I looked at Violet standing in the doorway looking flustered. Sara, on the other hand, averted her gaze in embarrassment.
I cleared my throat to ease the awkward atmosphere, "Um, d-did you see Liv?" I stuttered. What was I doing? Kissing Sara while Liv was out there in danger. Now I felt terrible.
It took a moment for Violet to compose herself and said, "The Mother rented the whole floor and it was full of guards. It's difficult for us to get in."
"What do we do now V?"
"I gathered The Mother is planning to take Olivia into one of her transactions in three days."
"Then that would be our best opportunity to strike and rescue Liv, but inorder to do that we need to come up a plan." My forehead creased as I tried to come up with one at the moment.
"I have a plan but it's too risky."
"I'm all ears V."
"Before we talk about it, I have to do something first."
I arched my brows, "What?"
She clenched her jaw, "I have to return to my mother."
