Seeing the tension in the room, Adam—wise beyond his years—quickly assessed the situation. He rushed to Sandra and clung to her leg like a lifeline.
With tears welling in his eyes, he whimpered, "Mom, the kids at school say I don't have a mother. They pick on me all the time! But the second they find out I'm a Wilson heir, suddenly everyone wants to be my friend. I don't wanna go back to Filici Country."
His big, sorrowful eyes looked up at her pleadingly. Morgan shot Anna a subtle glance, and the little girl immediately mirrored her brother, wrapping herself around Sandra's other leg. "Please, Mommy," she begged.
Sandra looked down at her children. Not for one second had she ever regretted having them. But under Morgan's influence, they'd lost their childhood innocence far too soon.
Taking a steadying breath, Sandra locked eyes with Morgan. "The kids stay with me. You can go back to Filici Country first."
Morgan's face darkened momentarily before twisting into a desperate expression. "Sandra," he whined pathetically, "I gave up everything for you! My career, my life—I stayed home raising our kids, waiting for you. How can you just throw me away like this?"
Her voice turned icy. "First of all, Morgan, I never asked you to wait. And I certainly never told you to quit your job. Remember our original agreement?"
Morgan's eyes darted away. He remembered all too well—how he'd sweet-talked Sandra into having children, promising she'd never have to worry about them, that he wouldn't interfere with her family. He'd been so sure that between his charm and the kids, she'd eventually forget about that worthless Regan.
But she'd surprised him. The moment Regan stepped out the door, she'd panicked—and now wanted Morgan gone.
No easy way out, then.
Morgan's eyes reddened dramatically as he put on his best broken-hearted act. "Fine," he choked out, "I'll go back to America. For good. Adam and Anna are yours now." He wiped imaginary tears and turned toward the exit.
The children immediately launched themselves at him, wailing hysterically and clinging to his clothes. With exaggerated sorrow, Morgan peeled their tiny hands away and pushed them toward Sandra.
"Sandra," he said thickly, "I love you too much to make this harder. You and Regan can be happy now. Just... be gentle with them. They've never been without me before." He wiped his eyes again and made a show of turning to leave.
Just as Sandra hesitated, Adam let out an ear-splitting scream. "Daddy, don't go! I want my mommy!" Then, shockingly, he started punching Sandra's legs. "You're evil! Go away! I want my real mom!"
