My uncle shot me a sharp glare and scoffed, "You think I'm an idiot? Chill. I'm not laying a finger on them—and I sure as hell ain't hiring anyone else to do it either."
"I'm a law-abiding citizen, you know. I don't cross lines."
He sounded dead serious, but something about it didn't sit right.
Uncle, with the way you were throwing your weight around at the hospital—cold, ruthless, like you owned the place—you don't exactly scream "law-abiding citizen."
While we were giving our statements at the police station, Mom had already been moved to Volkten. I figured he'd take me straight there next, but nope—he dragged me right back to the same hospital we'd just left.
I threw him a confused look, but he just lit a cigarette and smirked. "Told you—I'm not letting your dad and that bitch walk away clean." He exhaled smoke. "Their bastard kid's still here, isn't he? Soon as they left the station, they bolted straight back. Just sit tight and enjoy the show."
My eye twitched. "Uncle… you didn't do something to their son, did you?"
He rolled his eyes like the question bored him to death.
Before I could press him, chaos erupted near the inpatient entrance. A woman came stumbling out, shrieking, blood streaking down her face.
Eden?!
What the hell happened to her?
I stood frozen as a man charged after her, gripping a bloodied hammer, his eyes wild with rage.
That man was… my dad?!
My breath locked in my throat. My brain short-circuited. What the actual fuck is happening?!
Beside me, my uncle let out a dark chuckle, his grin widening as Dad caught up to Eden and swung—crunch—the hammer caving into her skull.
"Now that's what those rats deserve," he murmured, satisfied.
"Prison? Too damn easy."
"That bitch died by your dad's own hands. With all these witnesses? No way he's walking free. This—only this—is real justice for everything you and your mother suffered."
He turned to me, smoke curling from his lips. "Lesson one, Elle. This world doesn't reward soft hearts. And when you pick a man someday? Don't be like your mother—don't let love make you stupid."
