That was all I needed—just a seed of doubt planted in her mind. But then, the growl of an engine cut through the air.
I whipped my head around just in time to see a black van barreling toward the repair shop.
My blood ran cold.
I knew that van.
It was the same one that had T-boned us in my past life.
And behind the wheel? None other than Eden Watson—my father's mistress.
"Mom, MOVE!" I screamed, sprinting toward her.
Too late.
A sickening crunch echoed as the van plowed into her, sending her body flying like a ragdoll. The bastard didn't even brake—just kept speeding away like a coward, disappearing into the horizon.
My mom lay motionless in a spreading pool of blood.
Hands shaking, I fumbled with my phone, choking back sobs as I called 911 and then the police. Every second stretched into an eternity.
When the ambulance finally arrived, I climbed in beside her, gripping her limp hand like a lifeline. Terror clawed at my chest, but beneath it? A firestorm of rage.
Monsters.
That's all they were—my father and that homewrecking bitch.
I'd thought avoiding the highway would keep us safe. But Eden had been stalking us the whole damn time. She must've seen us pull into the shop. Must've realized we'd found the sabotage.
And now? She'd gone nuclear.
I wanted to carve them both apart. But right now, Mom came first.
Then—her phone rang.
The screen flashed: "Brother."
I answered before the second ring.
"Uncle—" My voice cracked. "Mom's been hit. We're in an ambulance. Please—"
"Elle?" His voice was sharp, laced with a fury I'd never heard before. "What the hell happened? She called me this morning—said she'd be in Volkten by afternoon!"
I spilled everything between ragged breaths.
A string of curses exploded through the phone. "I told her Zane was trash! If she hadn't threatened to off herself back then, I would've had his legs broken and fed him to the river!"
His next words sent a chill down my spine.
"If that bastard knew what the Calder Family is capable of in Volkten, he'd have pissed himself before pulling this stunt."
A pause. Then, deadly calm:
"I'm bringing my men. We're on the next flight. And Elle?"
"Your father and that mistress of his? They're finished."
The line went dead.
I sat there, trembling—not from fear this time.
But from the storm that was coming.
