Eden's face darkened with grief as she heaved a shuddering sigh. "Kidney failure... Watching a child suffer like this—it's destroying me."
My father shook his head, exhaling heavily. "Life can be so unfair..."
Watching these two put on their pathetic little act in front of me, I almost snapped.
Yeah, life was unfair all right—if it were just, lightning would've struck them both dead by now.
Just then, the emergency room lights flickered off.
The doctor stepped out, and I lunged forward, my pulse roaring in my ears. "Doctor—how is she?"
He shook his head, exhaustion weighing down his voice. "Her injuries are too severe. Even if we stabilize her... the best we can hope for is a vegetative state."
The floor dropped out from under me. My world shattered in an instant.
Before I could even process it, my father turned to the doctor, his face twisted in theatrical despair. "Doctor, I don't care what it takes—save my wife! Please, I'm begging you!"
The doctor's expression didn't change. "We've done all we can. You should prepare yourselves."
At that, my father drew a sharp breath. His eyes reddened like he was fighting back tears—as if he'd just made some impossible, soul-crushing choice. "Then... we should let her go."
His voice cracked. "I can't bear to see her suffer. She wouldn't want to live like that."
Ice flooded my veins. No hesitation. No remorse. The sheer hypocrisy of his performance made me sick.
I exploded. "NO!"
Whirling on him, my voice trembled with rage. "She's still fighting in there, and you're already rushing to pull the plug?! Is that what you've been waiting for?!"
His face twisted—and just like that, the mask dropped.
I barely saw his hand move before pain exploded across my cheek.
