"Elle, if you keep running your mouth, I swear I'll rip it right off your face!"
My father's glare could've burned holes through me, his voice razor-sharp. "Do you actually want your mother to waste away in agony? Stuck in that bed, helpless for the rest of her life?"
"I love your mother. Do you think I want to watch her suffer?"
As the words left his lips, I couldn't help but wonder—did he feel even an ounce of guilt?
Oh, right. A man like him didn't have a conscience.
Eden stepped in, ever the saint. She sighed, shaking her head like I was some unruly child. "Elle, your father just wants what's best for your mother. Stop making a scene."
Before she could spew another lie, my hand cracked across her face. The slap echoed down the hall.
Eden staggered, stunned.
"Elle, what the hell is wrong with you?!"
My father exploded, his face twisted with rage—like he wanted to flay me alive right then and there.
But I was past caring.
My uncle's warnings? Gone.
We were past the point of no return. If my father signed those papers to stop Mom's treatment, she was as good as dead.
I clenched my fists, my voice trembling with fury. "Zane, don't play dumb! I know what's going on between you and this woman!"
"She's not just your 'business partner'—she's your mistress! And she even popped out a son for you!"
"Your bastard kid's kidneys are failing, and since Mom and I are matches, you two decided to sacrifice us to save him!"
My father's face darkened, but I wasn't done.
"Not long ago, you took out accident insurance on both of us. Then you sabotaged Mom's car—wasn't that part of the plan too?"
I let out a bitter laugh, venom dripping from every word. "You're a monster, Zane. You don't deserve to be a father, and you sure as hell don't deserve to be her husband!"
I turned my burning glare on Eden, still clutching her reddened cheek.
"And you—his little sidepiece. You tore our family apart, and now you want Mom dead so you can take her place? You vile, shameless snake!"
"You two make me sick—and mark my words, you'll pay for this!"
My scream tore through the hallway, raw with fury.
Zane and Eden paled, realizing too late that we'd drawn a crowd. Whispers spread like wildfire, the onlookers' expressions shifting—disgust now aimed at them.
My father, humiliated and seething, barked, "Elle, have you lost your mind? Shut your damn mouth!"
Eden shot me a venomous look before turning to him, her voice ice-cold. "Didn't you say your daughter has mental issues? All this stress must've triggered her." She sighed theatrically. "You need to get her to a psych ward before she hurts someone."
Catching on instantly, my father raised his voice. "My daughter's unstable! She can't accept that her mother died in that crash, and now she's having a breakdown! Don't listen to a word she says!"
Then, louder: "Security! Call hospital security—now! We need to restrain her before she hurts herself!"
Just like that, their twisted story took hold.
The suspicion that had been aimed at them seconds ago shifted—now I was the crazy one. Murmurs spread, doubt creeping into the crowd's eyes.
My blood boiled. My nails dug into my palms hard enough to draw blood. "That's bullshit!" I roared.
I opened my mouth to tear their lies apart—
But before I could speak, men rushed forward, grabbing me.
"Let me go! I'm telling the truth—mmph!"
A beefy hand clamped over my mouth, smothering my screams. That's when I saw it—Eden, exchanging a look with them.
Everything clicked.
These weren't just bystanders.
They were planted here.
Eden had arranged for them to be nearby, waiting for me to make a scene—ready to silence me before my father could sign Mom's death warrant.
Panic and rage crashed over me like a tidal wave.
